Padres pregame: Miguel Andujar (hamstring) to IL, Nick Solak up from El Paso
The Padres need another bat from Triple-A El Paso as Miguel Andujar's balky left hamstring will send him to the 10-day injured list. To replace him, the Padres are selecting outfielder Nick Solak's contract ahead of a 1:05 p.m. start in Baltimore on Padres.TV.
Andujar exited Sunday's game after beating out an infield single. He appeared twice as a pinch-hitter in the Reds series - on Tuesday and Wednesday - but had not been able to return to the starting lineup.
Andujar is hitting .254/.288/.418 with five homers on the season but was hitting .196/.234/.333 over his last 29 games.
The Padres cleared a 40-man spot for Solak when outfielder Bryce Johnson - who was out of options - was designated for assignment on Friday to make room for Xander Bogaerts' return from the paternity list.
Solak, 31, had nine homers and a .333/.412/.512 batting line over 54 games in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.
He played parts of six seasons in the majors with the Texas Rangers and Pittsburgh Pirates, amassing a .250/.325/.369 batting line with 21 homers over 876 at-bats.
Solak is not in Saturday's lineup as Jackson Merrill (.602 OPS) will start in center, Samad Taylor (.777 OPS) will start in left, Jase Bowen (.398 OPS) will start in right and Will Wagner (1.367 OPS) will serve as the designated hitter.
Taylor, Bowen, Wagner and Solak were all with Triple-A El Paso before Bowen joining the team in Philadelphia on June 2, the first of four call-ups from the Chihuahuas over the last 11 days.
Here is how the Orioles will line up for Game 2:
Saturday’s pitching matchup
Padres RHP Randy Vásquez (5-4, 3.63 ERA)
He's got a 6.16 ERA over his last four starts as his strikeout rate has shriveled from 8.1 per nine innings over his first nine starts to 3.7 per nine innings. He's also allowed six homers over his last 19 innings after giving up four in 50⅓ innings to start the year. He has a 7.71 ERA over two starts (7 IP) against the Orioles, the last in 2024 (2 IP, 6 ER).
Here is how Vasquez has fared against current Orioles:
Orioles RHP Trey Gibson (1-1, 4.24 ERA)
The 24-year-old rookie is making a third straight start as an injury fill-in for Chris Bassitt. He has yet to complete six innings and has walked (8) more than he's struck out (5) in the first 17 innings of his career. Gibson began the year ranked No. 72 in Baseball America's top-100 prospects list. He sits 94.6 mph with his sinker, the most oft-used offering from a five-pitch mix.
Gibson doesn’t have history with any current Padres.
