Sophie Cunningham Injury Update Emerges After Stephanie White's Uncertain Comment
Sophie Cunningham has been a reliable backup guard for the Indiana Fever in the 2026 season, averaging 8.7 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. Most recently, she made headlines after making a precise inbound pass to Caitlin Clark that led to the game-winner against the Washington Mystics.
Unfortunately, Cunningham didn't play in the Fever's game against the Chicago Sky on Thursday due to an elbow injury. It was the first contest she had missed this season after playing in 11 straight games.
Prior to the Sky showdown, head coach Stephanie White addressed Cunningham's injury and shared that her elbow had been sore for some time now. The Fever tactician added that the decision to rule her out was about being "extremely cautious and thinking about the big picture."
However, White said she was uncertain if Cunningham's injury would cost her multiple games, noting that the Fever were taking it "one day at a time."
Fortunately, it doesn't look like Cunningham will be out for long. In a follow-up report by Chloe Peterson of the Indianapolis Star, she confirmed that the Fever don't believe the veteran guard's health problem will be a long-term issue.
"From what we were told, the Fever don't expect Cunningham's injury to be a long term thing. Just soreness that they're being overly cautious about, as they have been before," Peterson wrote.
Steph White said pregame that Sophie Cunningham's right elbow has been sore for a while and it's about being "extremely cautious and thinking about the big picture."

Of course it's still possible that Cunningham could miss another game. The Fever will play the Connecticut Sun on Saturday and the Toronto Tempo on Wednesday. Despite that, fans can expect her to return sooner rather than later.
The Fever beat the Sky in overtime even without Cunningham, improving to 7-5 on the season to stay in the top six in the WNBA standings.
