Jalen Brunson Announced Heartbreaking Friend Death After Game 4 Win
Jalen Brunson was truly spectacular in Game 4 of the NBA Finals, leading the New York Knicks to one of the greatest comebacks in the history of sports. What made his performance even more incredible was the fact that he competed with a heavy heart.
Brunson finished Game 4 with 36 points on 12-of-25 shooting from the field. He made so many clutch shots down the stretch to cut into the San Antonio Spurs' 29-point lead. While several players on the Knicks struggled to get going, he kept firing away regardless of the score.
"Really wasn't that much to be said at that point," Brunson said. "It was really just we need to chip away. We need to hit singles, get on base and make plays from there."
After leading the Knicks to a miraculous 107-106 win, Brunson let the media know that he lost a friend prior to Game 4.
"Before we start, my thoughts and prayers are with a friend of mine I got to meet last week. Jonathan from North Carolina, from Make a Wish Foundation," Brunson said. "They asked me to make a video. But something told me to Facetime… I got the pleasure to do so. It was a quick call but well worth it. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. I found out some news today. May God rest his soul."
NBA fans immediately rallied around Brunson after hearing this news.
"Even if you're not a Knicks fan, how can you not want good things for this guy," one person said.
"Such a good person," a fan wrote on X. "I bet most people don't even realize or forgot that he took a 113 mill paycut so we could have a real team. It's why so many of us would be human shields for him without hesitation."
"This was the first thing JB wanted to talk about after one of the greatest wins in NBA history," another person commented. "Says a lot about Brunson, the person."
One more win away from immortality.
The Knicks have been a perennial playoff contender since signing Brunson to a four-year, $104 million contract in 2022.
Suffice to say, Brunson has already cemented his status as one of the greatest players to ever suit up for the Knicks. If he wins a title though, he'll enter a rare class that includes Walt Frazier and Willis Reed.
The NBA Finals will resume on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. ET.
