Chiefs GM Shares Sentiment After Patrick Mahomes Contract News
The Kansas City Chiefs reworked superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes' contract on Wednesday in a record-breaking way, as the team added two years onto his existing contract. This new contract holds Mahomes with the Chiefs through the 2033 season with a total value of $504.75 million, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport.
With this added money on Mahomes' contract, it makes it the first deal in NFL history that has eclipsed over half a billion dollars.
Mahomes was originally taken with the 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by Kansas City, and he signed a 10-year, $450 million contract with the Chiefs in 2020. This deal was already the highest-total contract in league history, and it has now gotten more lucrative for Mahomes.
During his nine-year career with Kansas City, Mahomes has thrown for 35,939 yards and 267 touchdowns with 85 interceptions, being selected to six Pro Bowls, winning three Super Bowl titles and two AP MVP awards.
After this news about Mahomes' contract was released, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach released a statement about his star quarterback and what the deal means.
"This is a huge day for the Chiefs, Patrick and really all of Chiefs Kingdom," Veach said in part, per the Chiefs' post on X. "This is a landmark deal for a once-in-a-lifetime player. Patrick has grown into one of the most prolific quarterbacks to ever play the game, and to add to that, he's changed the culture of our building and has led us in the most successful era in our franchise's history."

This contract extension comes while Mahomes is hoping to be back in time to play in Week 1 for the Chiefs during the 2026 season. He is recovering from a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee that he sustained against the Los Angeles Chargers last year.
"For Patrick, we know he's more motivated than ever to get back out there and lead us," Veach continued. "I'm happy for him and his family, and excited for our future together."
Mahomes is hoping to be back on the field when the Chiefs begin their season against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 14.
