Indiana Fever Announce Unexpected Sophie Cunningham Decision on Wednesday

The Indiana Fever released their latest injury report on Wednesday ahead of Thursday night's showdown with the Chicago Sky, and one name immediately stood out.

While star guard Caitlin Clark was listed as probable with a back issue, veteran wing Sophie Cunningham was unexpectedly added to the report as questionable due to a right elbow injury.

The update caught many Fever fans by surprise.

Unlike Clark, whose back issue has been a talking point throughout portions of the season, Cunningham had not recently exited a game or been publicly linked to an elbow injury. As a result, seeing the 29-year-old listed as questionable less than 24 hours before tipoff raised immediate questions about her availability.

The Fever shared the status report on social media Wednesday afternoon.

Sophie Cunningham Has Become Key Part of Fever Rotation

Cunningham has become one of the most important role players on Indiana's roster since arriving ahead of the 2025 season. Known for her toughness, energy, floor spacing and veteran leadership, she has developed a strong connection with both Clark and the Fever fan base.

The former Missouri standout is in her second season with Indiana after spending the first six years of her WNBA career with the Phoenix Mercury. She re-signed with the Fever earlier this year and has continued to serve as a valuable contributor on both ends of the floor.

Cunningham entered the season coming off a strong 2025 campaign in which she averaged 8.6 points while shooting an impressive 43.2% from three-point range. Her ability to stretch the floor has made her a valuable complement alongside Indiana's star-studded core.

In 2026, Cunningham has played all 11 games, starting three of them. She is scoring 8.7 points per game, while playing nearly 23 minutes per game.

Fever Hopeful for Positive Injury News

The good news for Indiana is that Clark remains listed as probable after recently dealing with back soreness. The Fever will be looking to continue building momentum as they prepare for another high-profile matchup against Chicago.

Whether Cunningham ultimately suits up remains to be seen, but her appearance on the injury report was undoubtedly one of the more surprising developments from Wednesday's update.

With Indiana continuing to fight through a demanding early-season schedule, the Fever will likely take a cautious approach if there is any concern about the veteran guard's health.
