Soquel's Daniel Meisel takes 21st at Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon | Local Roundup

Soquel's Daniel Meisel took 21st out of 1,537 athletes at the 2026 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon on Sunday. He finished in 2 hours, 32 minutes, 25 seconds.

Meisel completed the 1.5 mile swim in 34:07, 18 mile bike ride in 53:19, and 8 mile run in 56:14.

Santa Clara's Kyle Berg took first in 2:13:49. San Francisco's Lindsay Nickel (2:35:06) was the top female finisher. She took 26th overall.

Soquel's Andrew Giorgianni (602nd, 3:23:12), Scotts Valley's Leonard George (756th, 3:31:28), and Santa Cruz's Brian Gogan ( 1,241st, 4:05:50) also completed the course.

La Selva Beach's Tim Sheeper, Sierra Sheeper, and Kyra Sheeper took first in the Female Relay in 2:38:42.

Women's golf

Dow Championship: Santa Cruz native Juli Inkster, 65, a seven-time major winner and World Golf Hall of Famer, will team with Los Angeles' Angel Yin, 27, for the LPGA Tour's Dow Championship this week.

Competition begins Thursday and runs through Sunday at Midland Country Club in Michigan.

Inkster, winner of 31 events on the LPGA Tour between 1983 and 2006, competes on the Legends Tour. She last competed in an LPGA event last August, at the Standard Portland Classic, when nearly became the oldest woman to make the cut at an LPGA event. She missed the cut by one stroke.

Fishing

Newport Bassmaster Kayak Series: Santa Cruz's Trenton Hoover took 14th at the 2026 Newport Bassmaster Kayak Series at Clear Lake, California's largest natural reservoir, on Sunday in Lake County.

Hoover caught 18 bass in the two-day event, nine each day, totaling 164.5 inches in length.

Santa Rosa's Matthew Brannon took first place after he caught 11 bass totaling 108.5 inches on the final day, which raised his two-day total to 20 bass totaling 207.75 inches.

It was the first time since 2020 that the event was held on Clear Lake.

Women's soccer

At Eclipse 4, JSC FC 1: Amelia Fung scored twice to help Santa Cruz's Eclipse Soccer Academy, a semipro team, rally for a home win over JSC FC in the teams' United Premier Soccer League match at Santa Cruz High on Saturday night.

Maddie Mitchell, McKenzie Flood, and Isabella Tuttle also scored for the second-place Eclipse (4-1-1; 13 points). Erin Freeman made two assists.

Eclipse hosts NorCal South Division leader Silicon Valley FC (5-0-1; 16 points) at Santa Cruz High on Saturday at 7 p.m.
