Cause Of Death Released For NBA Announcer Stacey King
A cause of death has been reported for Stacey King, the former Chicago Bulls big man and announcer, who died Sunday at 59 years old.
The Chicago Bulls announced on Sunday that King had died. King, a three-time NBA champion with the Bulls, played in the NBA for a decade, starting in 1989. He later went into broadcasting, becoming one of the most-liked announcers in the sport.
"Stacey King was a cherished member of the Bulls family and one of the truly unique personalities in our organization's history. His connection to Chicago, the Bulls and our fans spanned more than three decades – first as a player and later as the unmistakable voice that helped bring Bulls basketball into the homes of generations of fans. We will miss him deeply and remember the joy, energy, humor, candor and passion he brought to our organization, our broadcasts and our fans every day. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones," Bulls chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said.
Michael Reinsdorf, President and CEO, is also saddened, releasing a statement.
"Stacey loved being a Bull. You could feel it in everything he did – the way he played, the way he called games and the way he connected with our fans. He had a unique gift for bringing people together and making every game feel personal. He brought an energy and love for the game that came through in every broadcast, helping fans feel connected to our team. Whether it was through a broadcast, a conversation or a photo with a fan, Stacey made people feel seen and valued. We were fortunate to know him not only as a player and broadcaster, but as a friend. Stacey genuinely cared about people, and he made our organization better. We will miss him dearly, and his impact, memory and legacy will remain a part of the Chicago Bulls forever."
But what happened to King? How did he die?
ESPN 1000 host David Kaplan is reporting that King died after a serious fall at his home on Saturday evening.
"Absolutely devastated to hear that Stacey King has passed away at the age of 59 after a fall at his home. He made watching the Bulls, no matter good season or bad so much fun. God bless you, my friend. RIP. 😢💔," he reported.
The Bulls released team statement on his death
The Bulls released a team statement on his passing.
"A member of the Bulls' first three NBA championship teams from 1991-93, Stacey played an important role during one of the most historic eras in franchise history. What people will remember most is not just what he accomplished on the court but who he was. Stacey brought energy, humor authenticity and heart to everything he did, and people were naturally drawn to him," they wrote.
"For more than two decades as an Emmy-winning broadcaster, Stacey became a defining voice of Bulls basketball. His passion for the game was unmistakable, and his enthusiasm, storytelling and love for the Bulls created lasting memories for fans. He had a gift for making people feel the game, the big moments, the small ones and everything in between. He cared deeply about this team and this city, and it showed every time he picked up a microphone.
"Beyond basketball, Stacey gave generously of his time and his heart to the Chicago community. He built meaningful relationships, supported countless charitable causes and made a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to know him. His kindness, generosity and spirit extended well beyond the game.
"We are grateful for everything Stacey gave to the Chicago Bulls and to the city he proudly called home. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched, the memories he helped create and the enduring place he holds in Bulls history.Our deepest condolences go out to his sons Erick, Garrett, Brandon and Mason and to his entire family and many friends."
