Pro Soccer: Union fall on penalty kicks to Sacramento to USL Cup
SACRAMENTO — Progression on the pitch provided another point for Monterey Bay FC.
For the third straight match, the Union gathered at least a point, this time in the Prinx Tires USL Cup, playing Sacramento Saturday to a 1-1 draw, before falling 5-3 on penalty kicks.
In three Cup matches, the Union are 0-1-2, having earned a penalty kick win earlier this year against Oakland, in what turned out to be former coach Jordan Stewart’s last match.
Since dropping its first three matches under new coach Alex Covelo, including one in the Prnix Tires USL Cup, Monterey Bay FC is unbeaten in its last three matches, picking up its first two USL Championship wins.
Sacramento is on top of the Prinix Tires USL Cup in Group 1 with seven points at 2-0-1, while the Union have just three points at 0-1-2.
The Union, who return to USL play on Wednesday against winless Sporting Jacksonville at Cardinale Stadium, remain in last place in the Western Conference with just eight points.
Monterey Bay FC is one of four teams in the USL riding a two-plus game winning streak — with the other three teams coming from the Eastern Conference.
After failing to score a goal in four of its first five matches, Monterey Bay FC has produced at least one goal in nine straight games, with Riley Bidois giving them a brief 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute in the second half, before Sacramento countered in the 60th minute.
With the Prinix Tires USL Cup using penalty kicks to decide outcomes in the event of a tie in regulation, the Union were outscored 5-3, with Wesley Legget, Omari Glasgow and Eduardo Blancas scoring penalty kicks in overtime.
Fernando Delgado was outstanding in goal, with help coming from Kelsey Egwu. Monterey Bay FC controlled possession 72.5 percent of the time, yet was outshot 7-5.
