Dodgers' Dave Roberts Announces Reason for Will Smith's Removal From Lineup

Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Will Smith has not lived up to his usual standards this year, now in his eighth year with the organization. The 31-year-old has posted a .249 batting average, .338 on-base percentage, .720 OPS, six home runs and 23 RBIs across 52 appearances.

Smith is still a plus overall, especially at a position where consistent offensive production is rare to find. But he is clearly capable of more, and his efforts this year might end his three-year run of representing the National League at the All-Star Game.

His backup, Dalton Rushing, is having a breakout year, but the Dodgers offense becomes that much deeper with Smith performing to his full potential.

Unfortunately for Smith, he will not be able to get back on track Saturday against the Los Angeles Angels.

He was originally penciled into manager Dave Roberts' lineup hitting sixth, but hours before first pitch the Dodgers announced an updated version, removing Smith and inserting Rushing in his place.

Shortly after, Dave Roberts announced the reason for his removal. "Will Smith has a stiff neck, Dave Roberts said. Plan is for him to be in there tomorrow," reported Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic.

It is unclear when the injury originated, but given how deep the Dodgers are and how focused they are on winning a third straight championship this October rather than winning every regular-season game, playing it safe with Smith makes sense.

He remains one of the most important pieces on the roster. Further updates on his status will be provided. His next chance to suit up comes Sunday in the series finale against the Angels, but if he is forced to the injured list, Rushing would likely take over full-time behind the plate.
