Cathedral Catholic wins again on the road, earns spot in SoCal Regional final
LA MIRADA - The struggles at the end of the season, the illness that knocked out pitcher Cody Reynolds and a pair of playoff losses are a distant memory.
Cathedral Catholic’s 12-2 win Friday over No. 5-seeded La Mirada propelled the eighth-seeded Dons into Saturday’s Southern California Division 1 Regional championship game. They’ll travel to No. 7-seeded Huntington Beach at 1 p.m.
Reynolds, who improved to 4-1 on the season, went six innings. allowing six hits and two runs. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out four. Reynolds was unable to pitch last week against Patrick Henry in the San Diego Section playoffs because he had strep throat. Cathedral Catholic coach Gary Remiker said he “penciled” Reynolds into Friday’s starting spot once the regional playoffs were announced.
“And he was phenomenal,” Remiker said.
“I’ve been better, but I got the job done.” Reynolds said. “I’m happy with the win. Going six innings was a huge plus. It allowed us to save some arms for tomorrow.”
Kaden Kuhn, who is 4-1 with a 1.23 ERA, will start against Huntington Beach. Shoei Darvish, who battled injuries down the stretch, is not available to pitch.
“We have Kuhn and some decent bullpen guys, so I like our chances, Remiker said.
Reynolds especially liked his chances Friday once the Dons (28-6) scored six runs in the third inning.
“The first two innings were a pitcher’s duel,” Reynolds said. “Once we got three runs, it made things easier. Pitching with a lead is so much easier.”
The Dons added two in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the seventh as every starter scored a run.
Alex Harrington had a pair of singles and scored twice. Josh Pries singled, homered in that six-run third, drove in two and scored two.
Hunter Harrington doubled, singled, drove in two, scored once and made a fine running catch in center field. Ty Daniels had two his, scored two and drove in two.
Jonas Nalu walked twice and scored twice.
“We’re fighting every out for the team,” Priest said.”We have a team thing where we tap our chest to tell everyone that God is with us, that our faith is strong. Honestly, we never lost faith. We went into the Bosco game with a chip on our shoulder.
“We wanted to prove we belonged, and represent San Diego. Now we have another chance to do that, and bring home a championship.”
In other semifinal games involving San Diego teams:
• Francis Parker beat South El Monte in the Division 4 semifinal game and will host North Torrance at 4 p.m. Saturday for the title.
