Padres minors: Another strong rehab start with Missions for Jhony Brito

Jhony Brito took another step toward becoming a factor in San Diego.

The 28-year-old right-hander threw five innings of one-run ball on Thursday in Double-A San Antonio's 5-1 win at Wichita.

Brito (2-0, 1.96 ERA) struck out two and allowed three hits without a walk. He threw 42 of his 58 pitches for strikes.

It was Brito's sixth rehab start after missing all of last year following elbow surgery.

Brito made two starts in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League (7.50 ERA) and four with the Missions.

First baseman Romeo Sanabria (.751 OPS) went 2-for-4 with his sixth homer and right fielder Braedon Karpathios (.714 OPS) drove in two runs on two hits, including his fourth homer.

Designated hitter Tirso Ornelas (.766 OPS) went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and two runs scored.

San Antonio is 22-32.

Sugar Land 4, Chihuahuas 1: LHP Marco Gonzales (1-4, 9.16 ERA) struck out eight and allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk in 4⅔ innings in the loss. LHP Kyle Hart (9.00 ERA) walked a batter and allowed a hit while recording four outs without giving up a run. 1B Marcos Castañon (.871 OPS) went 2-for-4 with his eighth homer.

HIGH SINGLE-A FORT WAYNE (24-30)

Lake County 10, TinCaps 4: RF Kavares Tears (.786 OPS) tripled, hit his fifth homer and drove in two runs. DH Alex McCoy (.903 OPS) went 1-for-4 with an RBI. CF Jake Cunningham (.943 OPS) went 1-for-4 with a double. RHP Carson Montgomery (2.40 ERA) struck six and allowed three runs on two hits and five walks in five innings in the start.

LOW SINGLE-A LAKE ELSINORE (31-23)

Storm 10, Fresno 4: RHP Bryan Balzer (5-2, 4.38 ERA) struck out five and allowed two runs in 5⅓ innings in the win. RF George Bilecki (.742 OPS) went 2-for-2 with three walks, three RBIs and a double. SS Jose Verdugo (.722 OPS) doubled in three runs.

ROOKIE ACL PADRES (12-12)

Padres 13, Royals 4: 1B Colton Vincent (2.417 OPS) drove in two runs on two hits, including his first homer. LF Cardell Thibodeaux (.705 OPS) drove in three runs on three hits, including a double. DH Jake Bold (.800 OPS) drove in three runs on two hits. LHP Zack Qin (1.15 ERA) struck out six over four shutout innings in the start.

ROOKIE DSL BROWN (0-3)

Orioles 7, Padres 5 (7): C Pedro Silva (1.136 OPS) went 1-for-1 with a double, an RBI, three walks and a run scored. CF Eliander Primera (.788 OPS) went 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored.

ROOKIE DSL GOLD (1-2)

Rays 12, Padres 11 (10): SS Joniel Hernandez (.862 OPS) drove in three runs on two hits, including a double. LF Eddson Martinez (1.327 OPS) went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, a walk and two runs. 1B Abraham Bastidas (2.086 OPS) went 1-for-2 with three walks and two runs scored.
