Fantasy Basketball 2026-27: The Biggest Fantasy Questions Still Unanswered

Free agency is on the horizon, and the countdown to the 2026 NBA Draft is on. So why does it feel like fantasy managers still have so much to suss out?

Truth be told, several critical questions remain unanswered for the 2026-27 campaign. And they can't be ignored, as these issues can directly impact players' fantasy values and upend 2026-27 fantasy draft strategies.

The Biggest Rookie Role Questions Still Unanswered

Minutes, Usage, and Immediate Impact

The general belief is that Darryn Peterson will get picked in the top five, but will his health hinder his immediate fantasy impact? The Kansas product has said he is past the full-body cramps that plagued his freshman season, but a nagging hamstring strain and a severe ankle injury sidelined him as well. A top lottery team will want to give the young point guard big minutes, but a flare-up could turn him into a fantasy liability.

Speaking of guards, could a dark horse sneak into the top? Darius Acuff Jr. is the consensus favorite to go off the board after Peterson. But Keaton Wagler and Kingston Flemings both had very good workouts at the NBA Combine. And sleepers like Meleek Thomas and Ebuka Okorie have been garnering more attention. The field is wide open, making it hard to project which prospects will have high usage in 2026-27.

Finally: Will the Thunder trade up and jeopardize a prospect's chances at immediate impact? Rumor has it that Oklahoma City is actively trying to move up the board. While the chance to play on such a stacked team could be rewarding for a rookie, it could also lead to less playing time since the Thunder are already deep on both sides of the court.

Veterans and Young Players in Flux

Where is LeBron going to end up? James is a pending UFA playing a game of "should I stay or should I go" with the Lakers right now. If he goes to another team or retires, it could unlock more playing time for a young player like Adou Thiero and establish Austin Reaves as the clear second-in-command to Luka Doncic. But if James decides to run it back in Los Angeles, roles and minutes could be in jeopardy.

Also, where is Giannis going to end up? Antetokounmpo has been at the center of trade rumors for a while, and Bucks co-owner Jimmy Haslam previously said the team wanted to have a resolution before the draft. Milwaukee has the 10th overall pick on June 23, and who they select could be greatly affected by whether the star forward is there (who moves up the depth chart if he departs is also at stake here).

And, where the heck is Ja Morant going to end up? The Grizzlies have been active trade partners as they look to the future, but still haven't been able to unload Morant and his shenanigans off to another team. His departure would leave a depth chart void and chances for increased usage, although Memphis will likely have to part ways with up-and-coming youngsters or high draft picks to move on from him.

Positional and Category Questions That Will Affect Strategy

Minutes Scarcity and Priorities

Who will come out on top in backcourt battles? Crowded rosters make it very difficult for guards to get meaningful minutes, which ultimately cuts into their value in the assists and three-pointers categories. The uncertainty for teams like the Thunder can make it difficult for fantasy managers to target guards for their upcoming drafts.

Finally, are centers shifting fantasy expectations while they change the frontcourt game? The rise of versatile bigs like Victor Wembanyama has turned some centers into roster centerpieces. (Think of Maxime Raynaud in Sacramento or Moussa Diabate in Charlotte.) That takes some of the responsibility off of wings, but it also impacts their fantasy output. Fantasy managers should note which centers are playing a larger role and can be a bigger fantasy asset, then adjust draft boards accordingly.
