De La Salle's Drue Sanchez wins state golf championship

De La Salle's Drue Sanchez won the CIF boys golf individual state championship on Wednesday, shooting a 5-under 66 at San Gabriel Country Club to win by two strokes.

The junior is the first De La Salle golfer to capture an individual title since the state championships began in 2005. He tied for 29th last year.

Los Alamitos' Levi Reilly carded a 68 to finish second.

Sanchez birdied holes 1, 2, 4, 6 and 7 and bogeyed No. 3 to finish the front nine at 4-under.

He was 1-under 34 on the back nine, with three birdies and two bogeys.

At the North Coast Section championships last month, Sanchez finished second to qualify for NorCals.

In NorCals, he lost to teammate Barron Beinke on the third hole of a sudden-death playoff at Poppy Ridge in Livermore.

Sanchez's efforts Wednesday also helped De La Salle finish second in the team standings at 13-over 368.

Stevenson of Pebble Beach won the team title, finishing 1-over 356.

Beinke (22) and teammate Tavin McKinley (21) each had Top 25 finishes at the state championships.

William Chang of College Prep shot 2-under 69 to place sixth. Dougherty Valley's Nakul Shrivastava was 1-under 70 to finish ninth.
