San Diego State golfer named first-team All-American

For the first time since 1983, San Diego State is home to one of America’s best college golfers.

Sophomore Harry Takis was named a PING First-Team All-American on Wednesday, with the Golf Coaches Association of America announcing the honors ahead of the final day of NCAA Championship competition at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad.

Takis, a native of Brisbane, Australia, is just the sixth first-team All-American in program history. and the first since Greg Twiggs received the award 43 years ago. Takis is the reigning Mountain West Golfer of the Year, and was also a PING All-West Region pick.

Takis compiled a 69.23 scoring average this season, which is a San Diego State record by more than a stroke. He played in 10 tournaments during the season, winning once, finishing second twice and third twice. Nine times, Takis finished in the top 20 of his tournament.

His 70.29 career scoring average is also the best in program history.

The other All-Americans are Kihei Akina (BYU), Mahanth Chirravuri (Pepperdine), Filip Jakubcik (Arizona), Ben James (Virginia), William Jennings (Alabama), Jackson Koivun (Auburn), Christiaan Maas (Texas), William Sides (SMU) and Preston Stout (Oklahoma State).
