St. Francis' Nicky Fantl, Noah Magana earn first-team honors in Gabilan Division | 2026 All-PCAL baseball
St. Francis High baseball talents Nicky Fantl and Noah Magana were named to the Pacific Coast Athletic League's All-Gabilan Division first team during all-league voting.
Fantl, a junior first baseman, outfielder, and left-handed pitcher, and Magana, a sophomore infielder and right-handed pitcher, helped the Sharks (9-19-1 overall, 8-13 league) take fifth place out of eight teams in league despite not having a senior on their roster, and reach the Central Coast Section Division V semifinals.
"Well deserved," said Ken Nakagawa, the Sharks' longtime head coach. "Two of the toughest outs in the league, that played multiple positions extremely well, and both giving us quality innings on the mound. "I can't wait to see what they do next year."
Magana batted a team-high .418 (33 for 79) with a .526 on-base percentage and 1.083 on-base plus slugging percentage in the PCAL's top tier. He had more walks (14) than strikeouts (four), seven extra-base hits, a team-high 30 RBI and scored 14 runs. He stole four bases.
Fantl batted .378 (28 for 74) with .505 OBP and 1.059 OPS. He had nine extra-base hits, including seven doubles, 23 RBI, and scored a team-high 31 runs. He also led the Sharks with 16 stolen bases. On the mound, he posted a 2.56 ERA over 35 2/3 innings. He gave up 27 hits, 28 walks, 20 runs, 13 of which were earned, and struck out 47 batters.
St. Francis freshman left-handed pitcher/outfielder Angelo Urabe Chavez was named to the second team. He was the only freshman honored on either the first or second teams.
Monte Vista Christian junior shortstop/utility player Mikie Melenudo was also named to the second team for the eighth-place Mustangs (6-20, 3-18).
Carmel senior Matt Maxon, who is committed to Stanford University, was named MVP after leading the Padres (22-7, 19-2) to the league title and CCS D-II semifinals.
Maxon batted .473 (43 for 91) with 23 extra-base hits, including 14 home runs. He posted a .586 OBP and 1.619 OPS. He drew 21 walks, stole 25 bases, scored 47 runs and drove in 35 - all team highs. On the mound, he went 7-1 with a 2.26 ERA and 105 strikeouts and just 15 walks over 65 innings.
A pair of juniors, Palma's Zach Gonzales and Monterey's Johnny Money, were named co-Pitchers of the Year. Gonzales went 7-1 with a 1.52 ERA over 46 innings for the runner-up Chieftains (22-8, 17-4), who reached the CCS D-II final. Money went 10-4 with a 1.22 ERA over 80 innings for the fourth-place Toreadores (14-14, 11-10), who qualified for the CCS D-IV playoffs.
MISSION DIVISION
Alisal senior right-handed pitcher/third baseman/shortstop Angel Barajas was named MVP of the Mission Division for the fifth-place Trojans (14-13, 9-9).
