Soquel, Santa Cruz baseball teams head to Greater Sacramento area for NorCal quarterfinals | Local Roundup
The Soquel High baseball team was placed in Division I and Santa Cruz was placed in D-III at the seeding meeting for the California Interscholastic Federation NorCal Regional playoffs on Sunday.
Quarterfinal action in the single-elimination tournaments begins Tuesday, semifinals are Thursday, and championships are Saturday, all held at the higher seeds and featuring 4 p.m. starts.
Soquel (23-5 overall), the Central Coast Section D-I runner-up, received the No. 6 seed and opens at No. 3 Elk Grove (27-6), the Sac-Joaquin Section D-II champion.
The Knights posted a pair of shutouts and outscored their opponents 7-6 in their three section tournament games. The Thundering Herd also posted two shutouts and outscored their opponents 29-6 in their four tournament wins.
The winner faces either No. 2 St. Mary's (27-6) of Stockton or No. 7 Granada (19-9) of Livermore in the semifinals.
In quarterfinals on the other side of the bracket, No. 8 Saint Francis (25-4) of Mountain View plays at No. 1 De La Salle (22-4) in Concord, and No. 5 Bullard (19-8) of Fresno plays at No. 4 Valley Christian (20-9) in San Jose.
In D-III action, No. 8 Santa Cruz (18-11), the CCS D-IV champion, opens at No. 1 Roseville (27-4), the Sac-Joaquin Section D-IV champion.
The Cardinals outscored opponents 19-5 in their three section tournament wins, and the Tigers outscored opponents 18-4 in their four tournament wins.
The winner faces either No. 4 Foothill (22-8) of Palo Cedro or No. 5 Wheatland (24-8) in the semifinals.
In quarterfinals on the other side of the bracket, No. 7James Logan (18-10) of Union City plays at No. 2 Menlo (20-10) in Atherton, and No. 6 El Capitan (25-8) of Merced plays at No. 3 Alameda (17-13).

Koenig on rehab assignment: Milwaukee Brewers left-handed reliever Jared Koenig, an Aptos native placed on the 15-day injured list retroactive to April 5 with a left elbow sprain, has made two appearances on his rehab assignment with the Triple-A Nashville Sounds.
Koenig allowed two hits and run in his first appearance on Friday and gave up a hit in his second appearance Sunday.
Gilbert placed on family medical emergency list: The Chicago White Sox placed left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert, a Santa Cruz resident, on the family medical emergency list on Sunday. He'll be away from the team for an unknown period of time. Left-handed pitcher Chris Murphy was recalled in a corresponding move.
Mountain biking
BC Bike Race: Santa Cruz's Tobin Ortenblad took sixth place in Solo Open Men's division at the 2026 BC Bike Race in North Vancouver, British Columbia, which ran from May 23 through Friday on some of the best singletrack in the world.
Ortenblad finished with a time of 11 hours, 48 minutes, 26.95 seconds over seven stages, which totaled a little over 152 miles and 22,641 feet of elevation.
He posted top-10 finishes in every stage and top five in four stages. He was victorious in took first in Stage 6: Nanaimo, which measured 21.1 miles with 3,350 feet of elevation.
Nino Schurter of Chur, Switzerland, took first in 11:18:37.46. Los Gatos' Justin Peck took fifth in 11:43:54.46.
Santa Cruz's Sean Estes took eighth in the Solo 40+ Men's division in 13:52:24.08. Santa Cruz's Collin Clark took 55th in 16:19:33.77.
Santa Cruz's Michael McIntyre and Bruce Storms, competing under the team name Burrito Battalion, took 10th in the two-rider team Veterans 100+ division in 21:32:25.55.
