Stephanie White Under Fire for Caitlin Clark Decision After Fever Loss

Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever took on the Portland Fire on Saturday and, despite a strong start, suffered a 100-84 loss at the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon. A first-quarter substitution decision by head coach Stephanie White quickly became a major talking point among fans after the defeat.

Clark and Aliyah Boston helped the Fever get off to an excellent start, with the former recording three assists in the opening three minutes. Boston scored four quick points off two of those assists, helping Indiana build an 8-4 lead.

However, just as the Fever appeared to be settling into a rhythm, White substituted both Clark and Boston out of the game.

Portland immediately took advantage, going on a 13-2 run over the next three minutes. Even after Clark and Boston returned, the Fire's momentum continued, with the run eventually growing to 27-7 as Portland took a 29-15 lead by the end of the first quarter.

White was asked about the substitution decision after the game and explained that it was part of the team's normal rotation pattern.

"Well, AB is still in a minutes restriction, so that's why she's coming out," White said. "And that's typically around the same time that we've taken Caitlin out before. We didn't (take Clark out then) in Golden State because, quite honestly, we didn't want Raven (Johnson) in that environment without another ball-handler on the floor, but that's been our typical substitution patten."

However, the explanation did not sit well with many fans.

"This was the worst decision of the night. Pulling them out made zero sense and the game was basically lost in that moment," wrote one fan.

"Nonsense. She needs to be adjusting on the fly. Fever up 8-2 you don't stop to substitute," added another.

"Steph White rotated her players like they were playing 3 games in 4 nights. It was actually Portland playing its third game in 4 nights. Steph played 11 players in the first quarter. Wrong coach," prominent sports columnist Jason Whitlock wrote.

Boston has been on a minutes restriction throughout the season after suffering a right lower leg injury during Unrivaled in February, while Clark's workload continues to be managed following multiple soft-tissue injuries in 2025.

Many fans, however, were not objecting to the substitutions themselves. Instead, they questioned the timing and White's willingness to stick to predetermined rotations regardless of how the game was unfolding.

"I think we all know that it's the regular sub pattern... The real question is why you sub your best player out of the game, who is a rhythm player struggling with muscle issues, after 3 minutes leaving them get cold when they come back in," a user wrote.

"This only demonstrates the fact that White is a slave to her system and not what's actually happening on the floor. She's way too rigid," another added.

"This is pure coaching incompetence. Stephanie White needs to be fired," a third fan wrote.

Whether White adjusts her substitution strategy moving forward remains to be seen. However, the decision will likely remain a point of discussion after the Fever surrendered control of Saturday's game almost immediately following the early changes.

With the loss, Indiana dropped to 4-4 on the season and sits fourth in the Eastern Conference. The Fever will return home on June 4 to face Angel Reese and the Atlanta Dream at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
