Pro Soccer: Bidois' two goals lead Union past Loudoun United

SEASIDE – The road is far from paved. Obstacles remain in the franchise’s path toward stability following its worst start in team history.

Yet, there are signs that Monterey Bay FC is finding itself as it takes steps to climb out of the cellar of the Western Conference in the United Soccer League Championship.

While it’s still a small sample size, the Union have their first two-game winning streak of the year, using two goals from forward Riley Bidois to secure a confidence-building 4-1 win over Loudoun United FC at Cardinale Stadium.

Since starting the season 0-7-2, Monterey Bay FC has won two straight games, producing six goals. In its previous nine matches in the USL season, it had mustered just five goals.

As the Union adapt to new coach Alex Covelo, who took over four weeks ago for the fired Jordan Stewart, the offense has begun to show signs of life, while the defense has allowed just one goal over the last 180 minutes.

Three different players contributed to the power surge, with Bidois producing his first multi-goal effort as a member of the Union, while Sebastian Lletget and Chris Nadje also scored goals.

Holding a two-goal halftime lead, the Union answered Loudoun United’s (1-6-3) first goal to open the second half, putting a pair through the net in the 62nd and 86th minutes of the match.

Bidois’ second goal came on a penalty kick, with Paul Gindir, Lletget and Eduardo Blancas collecting assists, as the Union outshot Loudoun United 14-11 in front of 3,346 fans at Cardinale Stadium.

With help from defenders Joel Garcia and Omari Glasgow, goalie Jacob Jackson was solid between the pipes for Monterey Bay FC, who will look to extend its USL winning streak on June 10 in a rare Wednesday meeting, hosting winless Jacksonville.

The Union recorded a 75 percent tackle rate, getting 18 clearances to Loudoun United’s nine.

With two straight wins, the Union have climbed to within five points of the eighth and final qualifying playoff spot out of the Western Conference. Both of their wins this season have come against teams from the Eastern Conference.

Before Monterey Bay FC returns to USL play, it will visit Sacramento FC in the Prinx Tires USL Cup next Saturday, where it is 0-1-1 in two matches.
