CSUB's Parker advances in NCAA 100, run in 4x100 Saturday; Train Robbers on win streak
Makiah Parker's Thursday at the NCAA Track and Field West meet's first round in Fayetteville, Ark. was tough. She competed in two events, the 100- and 200-meter runs, and while combined they take about 30 or so seconds to complete, there are multiple heats for each event. Thus, waiting to see if your time is enough to qualify is what is toughest.
The sophomore sprinter needed to finish among the top three in her heat, the third of six on the day in the 100, to automatically advance to today's quarterfinals. Don't do that and each heat has to run its course and then the next six fastest times regardless of heat are determined for the last spots.
Parker finished fourth in her heat, going 11.40 seconds. Texas Christian's Indya Mayberry won the heat in 11.17. Dajaz Defrean of USC was second at 11.21 and Tarleton State's Lauren Roy was third at 11.23. She waited for three more heats. After the top 18 were secured, Parker learned she was 19th, the first person for having one of the next six fastest times, moving her to today's quarterfinal round.
In the 200, however, Parker was unable to advance. She went 23.74 seconds in heat two of six and finished seventh of eight runners. Texas A&M's Jasmine Montgomery won the heat in 22.65, a season-best. Her teammate, Anya Jackson, was second in 23.14 and BYU's Paje Rasmussen took the third qualifying spot from the heat in 23.25. The next three in the heat ran between 23.36 to 23.66. Overall, Parker's time was 32nd best, missing the top 24 group. The 24th runner, Arkansas' Taejha Badal, ran the 200 in 23.47 in heat three.
Parker has two opportunities to advance to the NCAA Track and Field Championships, June 10-13 in Eugene, Ore.
She will run first in the quarterfinals of the women's 4x100 relay, scheduled for 3 p.m. today. Parker will be joined by Chizitere Okey-Dike, Rionna Wallace and Teague Marzetta, for CSUB's run in the second of three 4x100 heats. Running in the heat with CSUB are entrants from UC Riverside, Stanford, Arizona, Texas A&M, Texas, UCLA and BYU. The Roadrunners' season-best relay time is 44.69 seconds. In the relay event, the top three teams from each heat will advance, as will the next three fastest times regardless of heat.
Parker will then compete in the first heat of three in the 100-meter quarterfinals at approximately 4:35 p.m. today. The goal is to be one of the top three in her heat. After those nine are decided, the next three fastest times, regardless of heat will determine the 12 total who advance.
TRAIN ROBBERS
The Bakersfield Train Robbers baseball team went from a three-game losing streak to winning its last two Pecos League Pacific Division games, both against the San Rafael Pacifics. The Train Robbers completed a homestand on Tuesday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark with a 10-4 victory.
After a day off Wednesday, the team started a road trip Thursday that took them to San Rafael. It was there that Bakersfield topped the Pacifics, 5-2. The Train Robbers were to face host Martinez on Friday before returning to San Rafael for a 6 p.m. game today.
