Padres minors: Jhony Brito spins six shutout innings in rehab start
Jhony Brito could be pitching his way into the Padres' plans.
The 28-year-old right-hander struck out four over six shutout innings, leading Double-A San Antonio to an 8-1 win over visiting Corpus Christi on Friday.
Brito (1-0, 2.03 ERA) allowed just one hit in his longest rehab appearance yet. He missed all of last year after elbow/flexor surgery and is five starts into a rehab assignment that began on May 7 in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League.
He made two starts in Arizona (7.50 ERA, 6 IP) and has now made three at Double-A San Antonio (2.03 ERA, 13 ⅓ IP).
Brito, who touched 96 mph with his fastball, threw 37 of his 52 pitches for strikes in an extremely efficient outing, his longest yet in this build-up.
Brito last pitched in the majors as a reliever in 2024 (4.12 ERA over 43 ⅔ innings) but he was a starting pitcher when the Yankees included him in the Juan Soto trade.
Left fielder Tirso Ornelas (.766 OPS) went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and a run scored.
Catcher Ethan Salas (.876 OPS) went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a walk and both shortstop Francisco Acuña (.612 OPS) and third baseman Luis Verdugo both drove in two runs.
San Antonio is 19-30.
