Westview rallies against Ramona, wins CIF Division 3 baseball title

Little things in a big game can lead to a huge celebration.

Westview High School took advantage of a two-base throwing error, a wild pitch and a fielding error late Friday on the way to a 5-2 win over Ramona in the CIF San Diego Section Division 3 baseball championship at USD’s Fowler Park.

The game was tied 2-2 when Jacob Kuy opened the Westview sixth inning with a single. He moved to third base on a throwing error. Elijah Whelan and Dylan Morici then walked to load the bases, with Kuy scoring on a wild pitch.

After a pair of strikeouts, a second error scored two more runs.

Tyler Bissemer pitched the final two innings for Westview in relief of Charles Jasiowiak, who got the win to run his record to 7-0. Bissemar earned his fifth save of the season.

“We pitched like that all season,” said Westview coach Brian Simpson. “Our starters have carried us, and Tyler, who is the fourth starter, has been the closer.

“We’re blessed to have great arms, kids we trust, kids who aren’t afraid.”

Bissemar gave up a one-out single in the seventh, but got a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.

“I didn’t like the closer role at first, but the coaches sat me told and told me how much they valued the role," Bissemar said. “Now I’ve embraced it. I like the pressure, but I also try and not to think about. Usually, I think about what I’m going to have for dinner.”

Jaskowiak went the first five innings, allowing two runs while striking out four.

“My goal was to keep us in the game,” Jaskowiak said. “I wanted to keep them off the board. I was able to throw strikes. My cutter and fastball were really good tonight.

“Winning this is such a thrill. And USD is a great site.”

Westview (26-6) advances to the Southern California Regionals, with pairings announced Sunday afternoon. Ramona’s season ends at 22-9.

Westview opened the scoring, pushing across a run in the first inning with Charles Jaskowiak’s single driving in Joseph Manley.

Ramona drew even on Justin Jarrett’s home run in the third.

The Bulldogs threatened in the fourth, leaving runners on second and third and finally broke through in the fifth.

Derek Taylor opened the inning with a double and went to third on Blake Hollopeter’s sacrifice bunt.

Taylor tagged and scored on Cal Melendez’s fly ball to left, barely beating Dylan Morici’s strong throw to the plate.

The Bulldogs then loaded the bases on singles by Tallon Ogilvie and Colton Simpson and a hit batter. Connor Schwettman hit a bolt to center field, but was robbed on a diving catch by Eli Irvine.
