NCS roundup: Northgate reaches baseball, softball title games

Northgate rallied in the late innings to edge third-seeded Casa Grande in eight innings on Wednesday and advance to the North Coast Section Division II baseball final with a 5-4 victory.

Up three runs after three innings, Casa Grande (20-8) scored four runs in the fifth to take a one-run lead.

But Tyler Eby came up clutch in the home half of the sixth for second-seeded Northgate, doubling to bring home John Zielinski to tie the game.

In the eighth, Liam Fruchtenicht was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in Cole Torrey with the winning run.

Northgate (21-6) will play Alameda for the title this weekend.

Division II

No. 12 Alameda 7, No. 8 Bishop O’Dowd 2

For the third time this season, Alameda downed O’Dowd. This time, the Hornets ended the Dragons’ season.

Sam Berger and Noah Nonato each knocked in two runs. Parker Nomura and Jaden Noonan each had an RBI.

Alameda sophomore Carter Grant was excellent on the mound, striking out 10 while allowing three hits and an earned run.

Division IV

No. 5 Newark Memorial 8, No. 1 St. Bernard’s 0:Newark Memorial traveled over five hours to upset top-seeded St. Bernard's behind a monster pitching performance from senior Connor Murphy.

Murphy struck out 13 and scattered four hits in a complete-game shutout. Seniors Anthony Medrano and Brian Covarrubias Jr. each went 2-for-4 with a home run.

The Cougars (17-10) will play Livermore for the title. St. Bernard's finished 22-5.

No. 11 Livermore 8, No. 2 Albany 6:Senior Tanner Bingham knocked in three runs as Livermore punched its ticket to the final with a win on the road over Albany.

Nico Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a home run. Lucas Boosahd, Jack Wilhite and Braden Ford each knocked in a run.

Livermore improved to 9-18. Albany ended its season 19-9.

SOFTBALL

Division II

No. 3 Northgate 3, No. 2 Salesian 0: Ashley Herman single-handedly ended Salesian's season on Wednesday afternoon in Richmond.

The Northgate senior pitched a complete-game shutout with 15 strikeouts. She allowed four hits and one walk.

The Broncos (14-10) got two RBIs from Sophie Hanko and scored three runs in the third inning to provide the offense.

DeAmor Coleman had a strong night in the circle overall for Salesian, going seven innings with all three runs allowed being unearned. She scattered four hits, struck out one and walked another.

The Pride finished 21-3.

No. 9 Foothill 8, No. 12 Casa Grande 7:The Falcons walked off Casa Grande at home after Eishita Singh's bunt scored Genevieve Duncalf with the winning run.

Naima Braham went 2-for-4 with a home run and Madden Dinsley-Klinefelter, Bailey Gasologa and Alexa Sponsel each knocked in a run for Foothill, which improved to 14-11.

The Falcons will face Northgate for the title at noon on Saturday at Diablo Valley College.

Division III

No. 6 Alhambra 12, No. 10 Freedom 8:Alhambra overcame deficits of 3-0 in the first inning and 5-2 in the second, then took charge with five in the third on its way to a semifinal win at home.

Nichaela West carried the heaviest of loads for Alhambra, hitting two doubles and driving in six. Adalyn McCoy added two hits, knocked in a run and scored twice as Alhambra advanced to play ninth-seeded Petaluma for the championship.

Mercedes Marquez had three RBIs and Ciera Canion homered for Freedom, which finished 10-17.

Alhambra improved to 14-12-1.

Division V

No. 2 Acalanes 13, No. 3 St. Joseph Notre Dame 0 (5 innings):Acalanes scored five runs in the first to take command and never looked back as it cruised into the final with a rout at home of St. Joseph Notre Dame.

The Dons will play fifth-seeded Moreau Catholic for the championship.

In its win Wednesday, Acalanes got a double, a triple and three RBIs from Santana Tamayo and two hits and two RBIs from Lauren Foster.

Maya Shoenhair pitched all five innings for the Dons, scattering two hits and a walk. The senior struck out six.

Acalanes improved to 9-14. SJND finished 16-8.
