Angels Place Nolan Schanuel on Injured List Before Tigers Game

The Los Angeles Angels are going to be without their first baseman for the foreseeable future.

The Angels placed Nolan Schanuel on the 10-day injured list with left ankle inflammation, retroactive to May 24 against the Texas Rangers. In a corresponding move, the Angels called up infielder Nick Madrigal.

To clear space on the 40-man roster, the Angels designated outfielder Matthew Lugo for assignment.

Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com noted on X that Schanuel underwent an MRI on his calf. He tried to battle through the pain yesterday, but ended up feeling worse. Bollinger added that Schanuel said he is unsure how long the injury will sideline him for.

Schanuel was having a solid season, slashing .262/.313/.387 with a .700 OPS and four home runs.

The loss of Schanuel is a major blow to a struggling Angels team. They are tied with the Detroit Tigers for the worst record in the American League at 21-34.

The former first-round pick had been a key mainstay in a lineup that has struggled to generate offense all season.

The Angels strike out more than any team in baseball, with a team strikeout rate of 25.4%. Anaheim also ranks 27th in average (.228), 22nd in OBP (.314) and 21st in runs scored (227).

Madrigal has not appeared in a major league game since 2024 with the Chicago Cubs. The former highly touted prospect missed all of 2025 after fracturing his left shoulder in a spring training game.

In Triple-A Salt Lake this season, Madrigal is hitting .275/.353/.366 with a .719 OPS and three home runs. He should get some playing time at third base with Donovan Walton. Angels starting third basemanYoán Moncada was also placed on the injured list last week.

After losing both corners of their infield, the Angels will have an even tougher road ahead. However, the Halos have won four straight.

They'll look to keep that momentum going against the faltering Tigers today at 3:40 p.m. PT.
