Kenny Atkinson Sends Knicks Message As Debate on Cavs Future Grows

Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson tipped his cap to Mike Brown and the New York Knicks after they swept his team 4-0 in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals.

Speaking to the media following their Game 4 loss, Atkinson had nothing but praise for the Knicks, as he took the high road following his team's blowout loss at home that ended their season.

Sometimes you just have to give the other team credit."

"They're playing great basketball. You just have to give them credit. They're on a heater. They're in a groove, just gotta give them a ton of credit," Atkinson said. "Congrats to Mike (Brown) and their staff. I don't want to detract from what we've done this postseason, I think sometimes you just have to give the other team credit for playing great basketball."

The four-game defeat to the Knicks was no doubt a tough pill for the Cavs to swallow, especially considering the team has the highest payroll in the entire NBA. But, as Atkinson said, the Knicks were simply the better team, and sometimes you just have to tip your cap and realize you got beat fair and square.

New York Knicks on a Heater

The Knicks beat the Cavs in four straight games, winning each game by double digits, to make it back to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999. For the Knicks, they are trying to win their first NBA Championship since 1973, and they look like they have a legitimate chance of doing so, while for the Cavs, this loss marks a bitter end to their postseason.

The Knicks have gone 12-2 during the postseason, with their two losses coming by one point each against the Atlanta Hawks in the first round. After beating the Hawks 4-2, the Knicks then swept the Philadelphia 76ers 4-0, and now they have just swept the Cavs 4-0, too.

Next up, the Knicks will play either the Oklahoma City Thunder or the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals. Because they won 4-0 against Cleveland, the Knicks will get some extra, well-deserved rest as they await the winner of the Thunder vs. Spurs series.

While the Knicks were 0-2 against the Thunder this season, it's worth noting they went 1-1 against the Spurs, plus they had an additional win in the NBA Cup Finals that does not count in the official NBA standings. So, technically, the Knicks are 2-1 against San Antonio this year, so if you gave them a choice of either the Spurs or Thunder in the finals, the Knicks would likely choose to play the Spurs instead.

Cleveland Cavaliers Could Make Sweeping Changes

Although it's not fair to Atkinson, he might end up losing his job as the Cavs are poised to make sweeping changes following a four-game sweep to the Knicks.

Last year, in Atkinson's first season as the Cavs' head coach, he won the NBA Coach of the Year Award as the Cavs came in first place in the Eastern Conference with a 64-18 record. But after sweeping the Miami Heat in the first round, they were eliminated by the Indiana Pacers 4-1 in the second round.

This year, the Cavs finished with a 52-30 record to come in fourth place in the Eastern Conference. After struggling to beat the Toronto Raptors and Orlando Magic in the first two rounds, needing seven games to beat each team, the Cavs were then swept by the Knicks in the ECF. That type of one-sided loss could end up costing Atkinson his job.

Ultimately, it's on the players to perform better, but for the Cavs management, it might be easier to change the coach rather than change the roster.

That being said, look for the Cavs to look at altering their roster composition next season. The team could potentially look to make a trade with the Milwaukee Bucks for superstar forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, though it would likely cost them former NBA Defensive Player of the Year Evan Mobley and a horde of draft picks.

The team also needs to figure out what the future holds for guards Donovan Mitchell and James Harden. Mitchell has one year left on his Cavs contract, while Harden has a player option for next season. Both players said after Game 4 that they want to stay with Cleveland for the long haul.

But after the Cavs were swept by the Knicks, they may need to consider really shaking up their roster, and moving on from one or more of their stars may be what they decide to do.
