CIF boys tennis

The Bakersfield Christian High boys tennis team, winners of their first CIF Central Section Division 1 championship, advanced to the CIF Southern California Regional Tournament last Friday.

The Eagles were in an eight-team bracket that included teams from the CIF Southern, L.A. City and San Diego sections.

BCHS, the lone Central Section entry, drew the Southern Section's Harvard-Westlake. The match, played at Southern California's Claremont Club, went to the Wolverines, 7-0.

The win started Harvard-Westlake's run to the finals, as they won 5-2 against Irvine Woodbridge in a second match on Friday. They then defeated Corona del Mar, 6-1 in the SoCal final Saturday. As a result, the Wolverines will now play Menlo High for the CIF-USTA State Championship at 10 a.m. Saturday at Fresno State's tennis courts.

The loss for BCHS ends the team's season, but not without several highlights. The team captured the South Yosemite Valley title, Cade Hiebert won both the SYRL singles title and then emerged as the CIF Central Section Individual singles champion. In doubles, David Hair Jr. and Adrian Araya finished runner-up in SYRL and were third in the section for doubles. The Eagles defeated San Luis Obispo, 6-3, in the Division 1 team final.

Train Robbers

The Pecos League's Bakersfield Train Robbers have been battling in their opening week-plus schedule with games against the Austin Weirdos, Dublin Leprechauns, Martinez Sturgeons and now the San Rafael Pacifics. The latter team came to town for a two-game series at Sam Lynn Ballpark on Monday and will finish it with the Train Robbers in a 7:45 p.m. game today.

The Train Robbers, following a 3-2 season-opening homestand, played at Dublin on Saturday in their initial road game. Dublin edged Bakersfield 5-4. All of the scoring for both teams concluded in the fifth inning. Bakersfield had nine hits to Dublin's seven.

The biggest one for Bakersfield came in the fourth inning, trailing 1-0 when Dylan Heil hit a three-run home run with Joe Riddle and Cade Fujii aboard to cut Dublin's lead to 4-3. Sam Ott had a three-run double in the Leprechauns' fourth inning. Fujii's RBI double in the fifth tied the 4-4, but Carson Richter's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth was the difference for the Leprechauns.

Levi Tucker weathered all the damage for the Train Robbers, going six innings, giving up six hits, five runs - four earned - walked five and struck out eight. Tristan Perry gave up one hit, one walk and struck out three in two innings of relief. Dublin's Gord Wend gave up Heil's homer and Fujii's RBI double in five innings of work. David Howard and Santiago Gomez each gave up one hit and struck out three apiece. Dublin pitchers issued no walks.

Bakersfield then played against Martinez in a Sunday afternoon game. The outcome was an 18-10 slugfest victory for the host Sturgeons. Bakersfield took a 3-4 record into Monday night's game.
