CIF sets dates, times, locations for this week's CIF baseball, softball finals
Amid one of the more difficult spring seasons in memory, CIF San Diego Section officials have finalized the dates, times and sites for this week’s baseball and softball championships.
The baseball championships start Thursday with a doubleheader at San Diego State. Division 5-AA plays at 4 p.m., with Division 4 at 7 p.m.
The championships continue with a doubleheader on Friday at USD’s Fowler Field. Division 5 plays at 3:30 p.m. and Division 3 at 7 p.m.
There is a championship tripleheader Saturday at USD, with Division 2 playing at 11 a.m., Division 1 at 2:30 p.m. and the Open Division title game at 6 p.m.
Softball will follow much the same format.
Divisions 5-AA and 3 play Thursday at San Diego State, with Division 5-AA starting at 4 p.m. and Division 3 at 7 p.m.
Friday at USD’s new softball facility, Division 4 starts play at 4 p.m. with Division 2 at 7 p.m.
There is a championship tripleheader Saturday at UC San Diego, with Division 5 at 1 p.m., Division 1 at 4 p.m. and the Open Division final at 7 p.m.
At issue was graduation. Several of the San Diego Section’s larger school districts, including all schools in the San Diego Unified School District, have commencement ceremonies scheduled for this weekend.
“We can work around a lot of things - prom, dances, Grad Night - but we have to respect graduations,” CIF San Diego Section Commissioner Joe Heinz said. “We felt it was better to wait on scheduling than schedule and have to make changes.”
The details come just in time. Assistant commissioner Todd Cassen worried that the schedules weren’t going to be figured out until after the semifinals, many of which take place in the coming days.
“But it came together well,” Cassen said. “We’re really excited to have these championships on college campuses.”
