Track and field: Locals shine at North Coast Section Meet of Champions, secure trips to state meet
Another healthy contingent of local athletes punched their tickets to the state track and field championships after running, jumping and throwing to qualifying marks at the North Coast Section Meet of Champions over te weekend at Dublin High School.
In total, North Bay high schools will be represented in 14 events at Buchanan High School in Clovis this coming weekend. Six boys and seven girls are moving on in individual events, along with one boys relay team.
Maria Carrillo will be sending its boys 4×800 relay team along with three other individual girls competitors. Cardinal Newman continued to be among the best in the section in throwing events, as the Cardinals are sending a pair of competitors to state for the third straight season. Healdsburg is also sending multiple runners to state, as a pair of boys qualified for the first time since 2006.
Here's a closer look at the standout performances from MOC this weekend.
Boys
The boys' 800-meter race was one of the major highlights of the meet, as five of the 12 runners in the finals hailed from local schools. Casa Grande senior Jack Dufour held the lead early, but it was Healdsburg freshman Phoenix De Maria Nall who emerged from a crowded pack in the final 300 meters.
The pack tightened in the home stretch and at one point four runners ran side by side down the home straightaway as the leaders all pushed toward the finish line. De Maria Nall crossed in second place with a time of 1:54.24 to secure his spot at the state meet. The top six finishers all finished within a second of one another.
"I was just thinking give everything I have - this could be my last race of the season and I couldn't let it be," said De Maria Nall, who set the Redwood Empire freshman records in the 800 and 1,600 earlier this season. "I just had to keep going. I just gave everything I had so I could qualify for state.
"It's really crazy, I did not expect that at all," he added of securing his trip to state. "It's such an honor to be doing this at such a young age."
The only other running event that saw local state qualifiers was the 4×800 relay on Friday, where Maria Carrillo's team of Jonathan Rath, Hugh Cochrane, Austin Petrik and Cameron Jones won the event in a new meet record of 7:49.68. The time is also a new Redwood Empire record, breaking the former mark of 7:50.10 set by Petaluma in 1974.

Analy placed third in the 4×800, one position away from qualifying. The time of 7:53.39 run by Owen Dawson, Quince Holman, Jeffery Gonsalves and Logan Dickson is a school record and No. 4 all-time in area history.
Another area record also fell on Friday as the American Canyon 4×100 team of Jay Woodson, Jona Budu, Timothy De Jesus and Jordan Burse clocked a time of 41.87 in the prelims. The same team set the Empire record at 42.06 last week at the NCS Redwood Empire meet and further improved on it at MOC. They put together a strong run in the finals of the event on Saturday but finished fourth, one spot away from qualifying, with a time of 41.89.
Another running time of note came from Windsor's 4×400 team of Domenic Andreacchi, Ethan Ponce, Ian Stanley and Marco Soto Jr. While their fifth-place finish in the event wasn't enough to advance to state, their time of 3:23.29 was a new school record and moves them into the top 30 all-time in area history. It's also one of the fastest times run in the event by a local team in the last decade.
It was the field events where local athletes really shined.
Cardinal Newman junior Vicente Adan qualified for state in the discus, the event he won as a sophomore, as he placed third overall with a throw of 166 feet, 3 inches. While a bit off his personal best of 179-04 earlier this season, advancing to state was his main goal and he'll have one more week, and another full season, to try to chase down his older brother's school record of 181-07.
"I survived and I'm going to state, which is what matters," Adan said. "I thought I could do a bit better, but in the end I'm going to state and I'll have a chance to do it there."
As for state, "I want to podium," he said. "That was the goal I set last year. I really want to make the second day."
American Canyon had a trio of athletes secure state bids in the jumps on Friday. Juniors Peyton Crowder and Amir Jones placed second and third, respectively, in the triple jump with marks of 44-11.75 and 44-10.50. Crowder's mark is No. 6 all-time in area history and Jones' is No. 8.
The other Wolf to advance was Woodson, who placed second in the high jump, clearing a PR and school-record 6-08. That's No. 12 in area history.
Healdsburg sophomore Teague Jasper cleared 6-06 to place fourth overall in the high jump and will be advancing to state since that mark is a California Interscholastic Federation at-large standard.
Also of note was the performance of Casa Grande sophomore Isaac Fellman in the pole vault. While he was also one spot shy of a state qualifying place, taking fourth, he shattered his old PR and school record by clearing 14-10, a six-inch improvement on his previous best. That stands as an area sophomore record and is No. 8 all time in area history.
Girls
The Maria Carrillo girls had a string of record-setting performance throughout Saturday afternoon.
First, junior Sireen Moalla secured her first-ever trip to state with a third-place finish in the high jump, clearing 5-04 on her second attempt to tie her PR.
"I'm really excited. I don't think I've really processed it yet, but it's really cool to be in the room with such amazing athletes and get the chance to compete at a higher level," she said.
Moalla also gave a good run at 5-05 but just missed on her three attempts. It's a mark she's ready to try to tackle next weekend.
"It was really relieving because you can't always have a good meet and you can get in your head about it, but it's good to be back at 5-4 and I'm really excited about 5-5 because I totally could have gotten it today," Moalla said.
Next was senior Sloane Crocker in the 1,600. In just her first season running track in high school, she'll be heading to state after her third-place finish in the event. Her time of 4:52.67 is a four-second PR and moves her to No. 12 all-time in area history.
"I was the most nervous I've ever been before this race," Crocker said. "I was so scared because I haven't done the mile that many times and having this insane competition here, I really didn't know what to expect. I didn't have much of a racing strategy, but I just wanted to do my best."
This is just the fifth time that Crocker has run the 1,600 this season, all of which have come in the past month. She broke five minutes in her first attempt at a dual meet in late April and is now No. 2 in the event in school history.
"I was obviously aiming for a top-three finish or that auto-qualifier time, but I wasn't sure just how realistic that would be," she said. "But I'm just so excited right now."
Finally, sophomore Martina Mulligan put an exclamation point on her breakout season with a third-place finish in the 100 hurdles, setting the new Redwood Empire record of 14.49, which is also a PR by almost half a second.
"I got a little wobbly at the end, but at that point I realized I was in third and I was like, Go!" said Mulligan. "Just really happy to be going to state."
Sonoma Academy junior Josie Hill also defended her section title in the 800, a wire-to-wire victory with a final time of 2:08.50, just shy of the meet record. Hill won the event as a sophomore at Technology High School last season with a time of 2:10.16 before placing 11th at state. Since then, Hill has improved several times over on her Redwood Empire record in the event, and her PR of 2:06.38 earlier this season still stands at No. 2 in the state this year.
"I wanted to run my race," Hill said of her performance, which netted her a win by almost a full second. "I walked onto this track confident in myself and confident in my abilities, and I knew that I wanted to just do things the way that I do them because I can rely on that."
Like the boys, the girls also had some great showings in field events. Cardinal Newman senior Kaylin Suacci is returning to the state meet in two events as she repeated as the discus champion and placed second in the shot put.
She hit a throw of 132-06 to win the discus on Friday and then hit a two-foot PR and improved on her school record in the shot put with a mark of 40-02. That moves her to No. 13 all-time in area history in the event. She is already the all-time area leader in the discus and her record-setting throw of 152-01 earlier this season still ranks No. 6 in the state this year.
Piner junior Makenzie Linsenmeyer is also going to state in the discus. She placed third in the event with a throw of 120-04. Linsenmeyer, who set the school record in the event earlier this season, is the first Piner girl to qualify for state since 2012.
"This feels really good because the last two years I was supposed to come to MOC, but I fumbled the bag at Redwood," Linsenmeyer said. "It was pretty bad, but I'm just happy that I made it here and made it to state."
Also Friday, Petaluma junior Lucille Walling took second in the pole vault, clearing 11-06 to secure her trip to state. Walling is the first Petaluma girl to make it to the state meet since 2015.
In other notable finishes and times, Vintage junior Helen Heffner placed fourth in the 300 hurdles, her time of 44.66 just 0.4 behind the third and final qualifier. Still, her time is No. 6 all time in area history.
And the Maria Carrillo 4×400 team of Victoria Consiglieri, Beatrice Belt, Tava Carrillo and Alena Henkel placed fourth in the event win a time of 3:58.42. That's also No. 6 all time in area history.
