Corona del Mar’s boys tennis team earned redemption against rival University in the semifinals of the CIF-USTA SoCal regional championship.
Achieving the same against Harvard-Westlake in the finals proved too much.
Top-seeded Harvard-Westlake defeated Corona del Mar 6-1 on Saturday at The Claremont Club to earn a trip to the CIF State championship May 30 at Fresno State.
Harvard-Westlake (21-3) will face NorCal champion Menlo (28-0) in the state final.
At the early-season All-American tournament, Menlo defeated Harvard-Westlake 5-1 in the finals at the Jack Kramer Club in Rolling Hills Estates.
Corona del Mar (21-3) edged two-time defending state champion University 4-3 in the semifinals Friday to reach its first regional final since 2023.
UC San Diego commit Ivan Pflueger sealed the victory with a 7-6, 4-6, 7-5 triumph against University junior JiHyuk Im.
Corona del Mar also received wins from Jack Barnes at singles and the doubles teams of Caiden Streff-Blake Nguyen and Matthew Carlin-Diego Tomlinson.
Corona del Mar not only dethroned the reigning state champion but bounced back from a loss in a super tiebreaker to the Trojans on April 20.
The Sea Kings won two of their three matches against University this spring.
On Saturday, Corona del Mar faced Division 1 champion Harvard-Westlake, who beat the Sea Kings 10-8 in the CIF-SS Division 1 semifinals.
The Sea Kings earned their lone win at doubles from Barnes and freshman Quynh Tran.
In the first round Friday, Corona del Mar beat San Diego Open Division champion Torrey Pines 6-1 while University defeated Palisades 6-1.
Woodbridge opened with a 5-2 win against Canyon Crest before falling to Harvard-Westlake 5-2 in the semifinals.
