Santa Cruz's Haley Jones among three players waived by WNBA's Portland Fire | Local Roundup
Santa Cruz's Haley Jones, a 6-foot-1 forward/guard, was one of three players waived by the WNBA's Portland Fire or Thursday.
The Fire also waived 5-10 guard Kamiah Smalls and 5-8 guard Sug Sutton.
In corresponding moves, Portland converted developmental players Holly Winterburn, a guard, and 6-2 forward/center Frieda Bühner to the active roster, and activated the contract of guard Teja Oblak.
Jones, selected seventh overall by Portland in the Expansion Draft on April 3, averaged 11.6 minutes, 5.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.0 assist in five games for the Fire (2-3).
She played a season-high 15 minutes and scored a season-high 10 points in a 100-82 loss to the New York Liberty on May 14.
College softball
Pauneto commits: Cabrillo's Charileen Pauneto, a sophomore catcher out of Valley Christian in San Jose, signed with Westcliff University, an NAIA program in Irvine, the Seahawks announced on Instagram.
Pauneto was a second team all-Coast Conference honoree in 2026. In 42 games this season, she batted .333 (46 for 138) with 11 extra-base hits, 25 RBI, 21 stolen bases, and 43 runs scored for the fourth-place Seahawks, who qualified for the 3C2A NorCal Regional playoffs.
The Warriors went 21-23 this season.

It includes midfielders Aidan Dellinger (San Luis Obispo High, Central Coast Surf), Alex Ziazadeh (San Jose Earthquakes Academy), Massimiliano (Henry M. Gunn High, Silicon Valley Soccer Academy), and Jared Balagot (Monte Vista High, Danville; Mustang FC), fullback/winger Luke Williams (Servite High, West Coast FC), outside back Micah Hoese (Maria Carrillo High, Santa Rosa United), and goalies Aidan Dunn (Archie Williams High, Marin FC) and Jonah Loza (Damien High, West Coast FC).
