Mater Dei played without its top-ranked golfer Thursday at the CIF-SS boys individual championships but still produced a historic medalist.

Junior Gianni Floriani shot a 6-under-par 66 at River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard to become the first Mater Dei player to capture the section individual title.

The Monarchs played without Brayden Jones, the reigning Orange County player of the year, because of a junior golf event, coach Ryan Kelaher said. Jones is a junior committed to Arizona State.

Floriani, who transferred from JSerra, recorded six birdies and an eagle to lead qualifying for the CIF-SCGA SoCal Regional on May 28 at Los Serranos Golf Club.

Santa Margarita and Los Alamitos each carded 1-over-par 361 to pace team qualifying for the regional.

Freshman Oscar Liang shot a 69 as Santa Margarita recovered after finishing outside the Top 10 in the Division 1 finals earlier in the week.

Sophomore Levi Reilly posted a 70 to help Los Alamitos reach the regional for the first time in school history.

Crespi (363) and Sunny Hills (365) secured the final two spots for the regional. Division 1 champion Servite placed fifth at 366.

Servite’s Hanks Wang and Sunny Hills’ Cole Kim shot 67 and 68, respectively.

Portola and Mater Dei finished sixth and eighth, respectively.
