3 advance in CIF golf; BCHS tennis plays in SoCal tourney; Driller football lecture; CSUB VB Golf tourney
The CIF Central Section Boys Golf Championship tournament Monday brought a close to the team title hopes of Bakersfield Christian, Liberty and Centennial, but three local golfers among two of those teams - Centennial's Bob O'Hara and BCHS's Raeyyan Shahid and Connor Carr - extended their seasons individually.
Played at the par-71 Monarch Dunes Golf Club in Nipomo, nine teams and 26 individuals qualified for the tournament. All were playing for either first or second place in the team category or to be one of 12 individuals to advance to the May 28 CIF Southern California Regional Tournament. The tournament will be played at Los Serranos Golf Course's South Course in Chino Hills.
In the team competition, Arroyo Grande emerged as Monday's tournament title winner, shooting 359, led by Shane Moncrief, who carded the low round of the day, a 4-under-par 67. Two other golfers for Arroyo Grande shot par or better. Second place and the final team qualifying spot went to San Luis Obispo with a 376. That team had four players shoot par and four in all were in the 70s. Clovis West was third (381), Bakersfield Christian was fourth (392) and Clovis North (395) closed out the top five. Centennial was sixth (398), followed by Clovis (402), Liberty (406) and Clovis Buchanan (417).
Individually, the tournament still gave BCHS and Centennial golfers the chance to move forward. O'Hara shot the Golden Hawks' low round of the day with a 68, and it was also second-best among all golfers in the tournament field. Shahid and Carr each shot 73 for BCHS, posting the Eagles' lowest rounds, to earn two of the last 12 spots for advancement.
Four additional local golfers had qualified for the Central Section championships based on their play in the May 11 Division 2, 3 and area tournament in Lemoore. The four, Ethan Gonzales from Ridgeview, Camilo del Rosario of Stockdale, Brock Marton of Frontier and Garces' Jacob Dahm, played on Monday, but did not advance. Del Rosario shot 77, Gonzales had a 78, Marton had an 87 and Dahm shot 89.
Team scores for local teams were: Bakersfield Christian (sans Carr and Shahid 73s): Jadon Valpredo 77, Carter Warkentin 81, Dylon Owens 88, Ben Wisnoff 96. Centennial (sans O'Hara's 68): Caiden Golleher 76, Maverick Moore 81, Chase Corwin 84, Mark Ross 89, Will Binion 89. Liberty: Stanley Cohen 78, Tobias Brandon 80, Jed Page 80, Cody Briggs 82, Fletcher Cohen 86, Morgan Slikker 96.
BCHS BOYS TENNIS
The Bakersfield Christian boys tennis team, coming off its CIF Central Section Division 1 championship victory last Wednesday against San Luis Obispo, will play in the CIF/USTA Southern California Boys Regional Tennis Championships, scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Claremont Club in Claremont.
Teams in the tournament are champions from the CIF Southern, Central, Los Angeles and San Diego sections. There are four Southern Section teams, two from San Diego and one each from LA and BCHS representing the Central Section.
BCHS opens play at 11:15 a.m. Friday against Harvard-Westlake. Should the Eagles win, they'd play a second-round match at approximately 2:15 p.m. Friday against the winner of Irvine Woodbridge (Southern Section) or Canyon Crest (San Diego Section). If BCHS wins both matches, they'd play in the SoCal Regional title match at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
Teams in the other half of the bracket are Corona del Mar (Southern Section), Torrey Pines (San Diego), Irvine University (Southern Section) and Palisades (LA City Section).
The SoCal Regional champion then plays for the CIF/USTA State Championship on May 30 at Fresno State. That team would face the winner of the eight-team Northern California Regional tournament this weekend at the Broadstone Sports Club in Folsom.
DRILLERS FOOTBALL LECTURE
The Kern County Museum's 2026 Spring Lecture Series will conclude today with a 6 p.m. program that will focus on Kern Union High School (now Bakersfield High School) football success in the 1920s and head coach Dwight "Goldie" Griffiths.
The high school won six state titles and 10 section championships. The lecture will be presented by Bakersfield High history teacher and archivist Ken Hooper at the Historic Standard School, located within the museum grounds.
Admission is free, but donations are requested. Lectures typically run 40 minutes with time for questions and answers.
CSUB VOLLEYBALL GOLF TOURNAMENT
The Cal State Bakersfield women's volleyball program will host its inaugural Volleyball Golf Invitational on June 15 at Seven Oaks Country Club with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
The tournament is a shamble format, meaning that every member of a foursome hits a tee shot and the best drive is selected and everyone plays their own ball from there to the hole.
Check-in is at 7:30 a.m., the driving range opens, and a silent auction starts at 8:15 a.m. There is a closest-to-the-pin challenge. During the tournament, there is a Motor City Lexus hole-in-one challenge and a closet-to-the-pin competition. After the round of golf, there is a lunch buffet starting at 1:30 p.m. and there's a program that starts at 2 p.m. which includes new CSUB women's volleyball coach Kristen Wright providing an update on the Roadrunners' fall season.
Sponsorships are available, ranging from $1,500 to $3,000 and each one includes play for one foursome in the golf tournament. There are no per-person or foursome tickets available at this time, CSUB's Gage Fiorentino said on Tuesday.
"The minimum price for a group of four to play would be the Rowdy sponsorship at $1,500. We still have some foursomes available via sponsorship, with the deadline for purchase being June 8, unless we sell out before then," Fiorentino said in an email response.
To register for the tournament, call (661) 654-2138 or email roadrunnerclub@csub.edu For any additional information, contact coach Wright at (661) 204-6742 or email kwright22@csub.edu.
