Baseball playoffs roundup: Newport Harbor reaches quarterfinals; Fullerton edges CdM
Gavin Guy had another spectacular pitching performance for Newport Harbor in a 4-1 win over Great Oak of Temecula on Tuesday in the second round of the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs at Great Oak High.
Guy, a UC Santa Barbara signee, pitched a complete game and allowed one run with nine strikeouts for Newport Harbor (21-9). He is 9-0 this season with a 0.61 ERA and has allowed one run or fewer in 10 of his 11 starts.
Henry Mann led the Sailors' offense by going 2 for 4 with one RBI. Ryan Williams and Oren Damush each went 1 for 3 with one RBI and Cameron Hatfield went 1 for 4 with one RBI.
Newport Harbor will host Aquinas in the quarterfinals Friday.
The Sailors have never won a CIF-SS championship but won a CIF regional championship in 2022.

In Division 3:
Fullerton 7, Corona del Mar 6: Lucas Delgadillo hit a go-ahead RBI single in the fifth inning for Fullerton in a close win over Corona del Mar.
The two teams each had a six-run inning in the third and fourth innings respectively before Delgadillo broke the tie with a single.
Mason Park went 3 for 4 with two doubles and a RBI for Fullerton (17-12) and Luke Gonzalez added a triple with one RBI.
Ronnie Martinez went 2 for 3 with one RBI and Caleb Brown had two hits with a double. Zayyir Martinez pitched three scoreless innings of relief to get the win and had three strikeouts.
JJ Haley went 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs for Corona del Mar. Carter Canada and Jason Trinh each had a hit with one RBI for the Sea Kings and Jack Phillips went 2 for 2.
Fullerton will play Agoura on the road in the quarterfinals Friday. Agoura beat Pacifica 3-0 on Tuesday.
Dos Pueblos 10, Edison 7: Cody Kruis had a strong day at the plate, but Edison had four errors and allowed 11 hits in its loss to Dos Pueblos.
Kruis went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs for Edison (13-16). Kobe Kee went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and Aiden Snyder had a run-scoring single.
In Division 4:
Canyon 4, Upland 1: Camden Goetz had a double, a triple and two RBIs for Canyon in a win at home over Upland.
John Somerndike went 2 for 4 with a double and one RBI and Bryce Lloyd drove in a run. Nathan Fuzzard pitched 6 ⅔ innings with one run allowed on eight hits with four strikeouts.
Canyon (16-14) will play the winner of Wednesday's game between Glendora and Katella in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Laguna Beach 7, Woodbridge 2: The Breakers avenged their two regular-season losses to Woodbridge by beating the Warriors at Laguna Beach High.
Laguna Beach (18-11) lost both of its Pacific Coast League games to Woodbridge in the regular season.
Dylan Yencho went 2 for 3 with a home run, a double and three RBIs for Laguna Beach. Jacob Wicker had two doubles with a RBI and Otis Boultinghouse went 3 for 4 with a double and one RBI.
Gabe Paz had a double with a RBI and Branson Wade allowed one run in six innings with seven strikeouts.
Caden Camacho went 2 for 4 with a double and a RBI for Woodbridge (19-11). Henry Uhrik had two hits and JJ Metcalf drove in a run.
Laguna Beach will play at Moorpark in the quarterfinals Friday.
Marina 11, La Quinta 7: Marina had two five-run innings to win at home against La Quinta of La Quinta.
Will Baker and Elijah Hereld each had doubles and drove in three runs for Marina (15-15). Mason Nolan had a double with two RBIs and Jaxon Vilardi had two hits. Aiden Hesse and Max Conde each had singles and drove in runs.
Marina will play at Grand Terrace in the quarterfinals Friday.
In Division 5:
Irvine 3, Citrus Valley 2: Irvine had 10 hits in a close win at home against Citrus Valley.
Nico Macalino led Irvine's offense with two hits and one RBI. Owen Song and Smith Spivey each had two hits and Song stole a base. Brody LaGrass went 1 for 3 with a RBI and Jack Dressendorfer had a hit with a run.
Jason Alderson and Dressendorfer combined to pitch four innings of scoreless relief and Alderson had two strikeouts.
Irvine (16-13) will play at Cathedral in the quarterfinals Friday.
In Division 8:
Rancho Alamitos 13, Edgewood 10: Aidan Martinez went 3 for 3 with three doubles and four RBIs for Rancho Alamitos (13-11).
Henry Garcia went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Ethan Shepherd had two hits with a double and three RBIs. Hector Galeano added three hits with a stolen base and two RBIs.
Rancho Alamitos will host Chadwick in the quarterfinals Friday.
In Division 9:
Santiago 7, St. Pius X-St. Matthias 6: Matthew Rubin had a home run and two RBIs in Santiago's win.
Santiago Lopez went 2 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs for Santiago (10-16). Chris Arceo and Benjamin Barreto each doubled for the Cavaliers and Jairo Camino drove in a run. Tomas Daniel Romero allowed no earned runs in six innings for Santiago.
Santiago will host Temecula Prep in the quarterfinals on Friday.
