Top 10 baseball rankings

Top 10 baseball rankings

1. Carmel: The Gabilan Division champions are riding a seven-game winning streak for the second time this year into the playoffs, having won a Pacific Coast Athletic League leading 21 games.

2. Palma: During their current five-game winning streak, the Chieftains offense has produced 50 runs, while the pitching staff has tossed two shutouts.

3. Soquel: Perhaps falling to Santa Cruz was a wakeup call for the two-time reigning Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League champions, who bounced back by scoring 20 runs in avenging that setback

4. Hollister: The Balers should have a little energy riding into the postseason, having gone 7-2 down the stretch, with both losses being by a single run.

5. Aptos: The hope is the Mariners have fought through a late-season slump of dropping four of five, by closing the season with two straight wins to finish second in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League.

6. Monterey: While closing the Gabilan Division season by dropping six of their final eight isn’t ideal, the Toreadores do have wins over five teams headed to the Central Coast Section playoffs.

7. Stevenson: There is a feeling that the Pirates have yet to play their best baseball, despite running off and capturing their second straight Mission Division title by three full games.

8. Harbor: The Pirates didn’t win 18 games by accident, tuning up for the playoffs by going 6-3 down the stretch, with two of those losses coming from Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League champion Soquel.

9. St. Francis: How long the Sharks last in the postseason will likely be determined by their pitching, which has given up 53 runs in their last three losses.

10. Salinas: Could be a dangerous team in the postseason, having closed the season with a pair of wins, including a play-in win over Rancho San Juan.

On the bubble: Santa Cruz, King City, Pacific Grove, Rancho San Juan, North County.
