Local Roundup: Area athletes capture SJS track and field titles

Several area track and field athletes shined at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III championships held at Sacramento City College on Saturday.

Will C. Wood High School's DeShawn Seymour Jr. won the boys 100-meter dash with a blistering personal best of 10.22 seconds. His time was the best on the day, edging out Division I winner Cy Lugo (10.26) of Elk Grove.

Seymour also won the 200 (21.15) and finished third in the 4-by-400 relay alongside Timmothy Pinkney Jr., Alex Pelayo and Sir Sams (3:21.80).

Pelayo took third in the 800 (1:56.58), while Michelle Hughes was third in the girls 400 (1:00.07) and fifth in the 200 (25.80).

Naiaja Sizemore, the defending state champion in the 100 and 200, starred for Vanden, winning the girls 100 (11.47) and 200 (23.64). Ariana Lewis finished fourth in both the 100 hurdles (16.02) and 300 hurdles (47.87), while Brooklyn Hill was fourth in the shot put (36 feet, 8 inches).

On the boys side, Robert Eddings (15.17) and Jason Achamfuor (15.21) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 110 hurdles.

Cooper Stream led the way for Vacaville, winning the boys 1600 (4:10.54). Ty Hundley finished third in the 1600 (4:16.99), while William Wurzbach placed fifth in the 800 (1:58.28) and sixth in the 1600 (4:19.04).

On the girls side, Khloe DeLaTorre took fourth in the 1600 (5:05.09).

Vacaville Christian's Josie Krulick starred in Division V, finishing second in the girls 1600 (5:04.51) and fourth in the 800 (2:26.43).

SoftballWood 9, Rio Linda 6

The fifth-seeded Will C. Wood High School softball team racked up 14 hits in a 9-6 win over fourth-seeded Rio Linda on Friday to advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV semifinals.

Seniors Karly Sampson and Maddie Farnham led the Wildcats with three hits apiece, while Josselyn Alvarez, Sophie Rivera and Sophia Criswell each collected two hits. Farnham also earned the win in the circle, striking out four in seven innings.

Wood will head to Woodland to face top-seeded Pioneer on Tuesday. Although Pioneer swept the Wildcats in Monticello Empire League play, both games were decided by just one run. Wood fell 8-7 on April 3 and 4-3 on April 29.

Del Oro 16, Vacaville 1

The seventh-seeded Vacaville High School softball team surrendered 11 runs in the first inning to fall 16-1 to second-seeded Del Oro in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II quarterfinals on Friday.

The Bulldogs finished up their season at 15-12 overall and 8-4 in the MEL.
