Local softball, baseball teams head to the playoffs

May 18-Summer is approaching, but before vacation trips to a remote resort are made, some local high school softball and baseball players have penciled in other plans - the postseason.

On Sunday the North Coast Section announced its brackets for softball and baseball and some local teams were selected to continue its seasons.

American Canyon High's softball team recently won the Vine Valley Athletic League with an 11-1 record and now are the No. 7 seed in the Division I bracket. On Tuesday the Wolves will take on La Granada, which are the No. 10 seed.

The Wolves are led by a trio of .500 hitters, with Kate Sosa and Deja Montgomery both entering the matchup with a .554 average. Madison Del Castillo is batting .519. Montgomery leads the team with 41 stolen bases.

Sosa also leads the team with six home runs and 47 RBI and is one of the squad's best pitchers with an ERA of 1.62.

At the same time American Canyon plays, Benicia softball will be taking on Encinal on the road in Division II play. Benicia is led by Arielle Der with her .409 batting average, but Skyler Jacome with her .403 batting average and Alyssa Haywood with her three home runs give the Panthers some depth. Whether or not the Panthers go far in the postseason depends on if their pitching can improve.

On Wednesday the St. Patrick-St. Vincent softball team will play Credo at home at 5 p.m. in Division 6 action. The Bruins are led by Jaquelyn Benito, who is batting .567 this year to go with her 21 stolen bases. Her teammates Alliana Jones and Alondra Barba are also batting over .400 (.457 and .441 respectively). Like Benicia, St. Pat's will also need to see better pitching if it wants to make it to multiple playoff rounds.

In baseball, Bethel baseball made it in the Division 4 bracket and will take on No. 2 seed Albany on Wednesday. Bethel is 10-15 overall and was 6-6 in the Tri-County Athletic League. The Jaguars come into postseason action having won three of their last four games.

St. Pat's baseball team is playing at home on Tuesday in Division 5 action, but is the No. 13 seed against No. 4 Ferndale. The Bruins are at home because they won their league tournament.

The Bruins are led by Royce Pennington, who is batting .500 on the year. He may be even better on the mound, as his miniscule ERA is just 0.33. Jaden Dichoco and John Bibb have also pitched very well for St. Pat's this season.

Madden Mendez has excelled offensively, leading the team in hits and runs scored.

Finally, Benicia baseball is playing Wednesday night at 7 p.m. under the lights against Bishop O'Dowd in Division II action. Benicia is 13-11 overall, but struggled in a difficult Diablo Valley Athletic League, going just 3-7.
