Mira Costa boys track team wins first CIF-SS championship
The Mira Costa boys track and field team made history Saturday, winning their first CIF-Southern Section championship
The Mustangs, led by coach Moe Russell, scored 62 points in Division 1, holding off second-place Loyola (58) for the team title at Moorpark High.
"Like all sports, the coaching staff was trying to map out the game or the meet to see how it was going to go," Russell said. "It can always go so many different ways, but looking at the points and where we thought (which events) we would be winners at, we liked our chances.
"Going in, we thought we could finish top three, but as the meet started to unfold, things started to look a lot brighter."
Ryan Burger won the 800m race for the Mustangs (1:52.68). Tomek Gorzkowski (15-11.00) was second in the pole vault and Mateo Loo finished second in the 300 hurdles (37.50).
Also scoring points were A.J. McBean, who finished fourth in the 100 with a time of 10.58, Loo was fifth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.64. Caden Enright finished sixth in 400 (48.67), Krish Desai (4:07.03) was third in the 1600 and Carson Ehman finished fourth in the 3200 (9:02.17). The 4×100 relay team finished fifth and 4×800 team was fourth.
The CIF-SS title was clinched in the 4×400 relay. Russell said that the Mustangs had to finish no worst than sixth.
"We controlled our destiny," he said.
The Mustangs clinched with a fifth-place finish, with a time of 3:16.93.
"The season has been awesome," Russell said. "We took a trip to Oregon and ran at the relays and performed well. Then we had two solid weeks at Arcadia and Mt. SAC and having meets like that, three weeks in a row and then heading into Bay League prelims, sets everybody up for being battled-tested for CIF."
Also in the division, Redondo Union's Mario Montoya finished second in the 3200 with a time of 8:54.01) and his teammate Bo Ausmus was first in the Discus Throw (187-09) and the shot put (63-02.00).
In Division 2, Torrance's Nicolas Obimga swept the 100 and 200. He posted a 10.38 in the 100 race and 21.01 in the 200.
