Mira Costa boys volleyball receives top seed in CIF SoCal Regional playoffs

The Mira Costa boys volleyball team will begin the path toward a second consecutive CIF State championship Tuesday.

The Mustangs, who won their second consecutive CIF-Southern Section title Friday, is the top seed in the Division I CIF State playoffs. Mira Costa will host No. 8 Torrey Pines at 6 p.m.

The teams met back in March in the Best of the West quarterfinals with Mira Costa winning the best two-of-three match in three sets.

Redondo Union is the fourth seed. The Sea Hawks will host No. 5 Corona del Mar. The teams met in the season-opening Redondo/Mira Costa Varsity Invitational, Feb. 21, with Corona del Mar winning in two sets.

If Redondo and Mira Costa both win, the Bay League rivals will meet Thursday in the regional semifinals at Mira Costa.

The bottom half of the bracket features No. 6 Newport Harbor at No. 3 Huntington Beach and No. 7 Bishop's at No. 2 Loyola.

The regional finals are Saturday and the state championship is May 30 at Fresno City College.
