Track and field: Sonoma Academy, Maria Carrillo girls win team titles at section area meets

It was another exceptional day for local track and field athletes across the region as a large contingent qualified Saturday to advance to next week's North Coast Section Meet of Champions.

At Santa Rosa Junior College, several all-time marks were set in the NCS Redwood Empire meet, featuring the larger schools from Sonoma, Marin, Mendocino, Napa and Humboldt counties. The top six finishers in each event will advance to MOC, except in the 4×800 relay, where only the top two squads advance.

At Montgomery, the Sonoma Academy girls were the star of the show at the NCS Class A meet. The top three finishers in each event advance but, like at the Redwood Empire meet, only the top two teams in the 4×800 relay.

Competitors outside the top six finishers can also advance if their marks are among the best across all four NCS meets that were held Saturday.

Here's a closer look at standout local performers from Saturday.

Class A

The Sonoma Academy girls won their first-ever Class A meet title in program history, scoring 72 points to outpace second-place Fort Bragg (59), on a day when the Coyotes won six events and set seven school and two meet records.

Junior Josie Hill clocked a pair of wins in the 800 and 1,600 with times of 2:10.61 and 4:53.24, respectively. She also helped the 4×400 team to a win in 4:02.07, shattering their own school record set earlier this season by over five seconds and setting a new meet record. The other legs of the relay were run by Mielle Snyder, Mia Carpenter and Kate Bilal.

Hill, whose 800 time was also a meet record, is the defending NCS champion in the event and will head to MOC with the top time in the section of 2:06.38 under her belt this season. She's also No. 2 in the section in the 1,600 and No. 3 in the 400, an event she won't be running next week.

Bilal, a junior, also had an outstanding day, winning both the 100 and 200. Her 100 time of 12.39 was a personal and school record, and is the No. 4 time ever run by a junior in Redwood Empire history, according to records compiled by redwoodempirerunning.com.

Her 200 time of 25.21 is also a PR and is tied for the fourth-best wind-legal and fully automatic time in area history. It's also No. 3 all-time in area history for a junior.

Sophomore Siena Jasper will also be competing at MOC in two events, as she won both the discus (114-03) and placed second in the shot put (31-00.50). Her mark in the shot put is also a school record.

For the Sonoma Academy boys, senior Aidan Crockett secured a trip to MOC with a third-place finish in 11.07, breaking his own school record of 11.14. Crockett also improved on another school record in the 200, which he ran in 22.56, and helped the 4×400 team to a school record of 3:33.46.

The other Sonoma Academy school record that fell was in the 4×800, an event where Charlie Rubenstein, James DiBartolo, Beckett Lynch and Arman Mohammadi finished in 8:32.84.

Summerfield Waldorf also had an impressive display from two of its stars, sophomore Liam Gannon and junior Adelaide Hill. Gannon placed second in the 100 and third in the 200. His wind-legal time of 10.76 (+1.8) in the 100 is a wind-legal sophomore record and the No. 3 fully automatic time in area history.

Meanwhile, his wind-aided 200 time of 22.16 (+2.1) is the No. 3 fully automatic time for a sophomore in area history.

Hill placed second in the 100 behind Bilal with a wind-legal time of 12.66, No. 5 all-time for a sophomore in area history, and is also advancing to MOC in the 200. She finished fourth in that event with a time of 25.98 but is moving after one of the top-three finishers elected not compete in the race next week.

Redwood Empire

The Maria Carrillo girls brought home the team title, scoring 98.5 points, well clear of second-place Archie Williams with 59. The Pumas had winners in four events and are sending at least 13 individuals and two relay teams to MOC next week.

Sophomore Martina Mulligan won the 100 hurdles in 14.98 seconds and qualified in two other events – the long jump (17-08) and the 4×100 relay (49.12). Senior Sloane Crocker also won the 1,600, shattering her PR with a time of 4:56.37 and moving her up into the top 20 all-time in the event in area history.

The Pumas' 4×400 relay team – comprised of Andi Fogg, Beatrice Belt, Tava Carrillo and Alena Henkel – also won with a time of 4:00.27, which stands as a top-10 mark all-time in area history.

Junior Sireen Moalla also continued her dominance in the high jump, winning with a mark of 5-0. The Pumas had three of the top-five placers in the event.

Also of note was the Pumas' 4×100 team of Henkel, Carrillo, Gianna Morley and Mulligan, which placed fourth with a time of 49.12. That stands No. 5 all-time in area history.

Cardinal Newman senior Kaylin Suacci was a double winner, taking first in both the shot put (36-11) and the discus (138-10). Suacci is the defending NCS champion in the latter event and set a top-five mark in the state at the North Bay League championship meet earlier this month.

Petaluma junior Lucille Walling was another local winner, taking first in the pole vault by clearing 11-02.

And in the relays, Windsor's girls 4×800 team of Annaleigh Malsbary, Audrey Zepaltas, Emma Behrens and Emily Williams won the event by nine seconds with a time of 9:48.72, a new school record.

On the boys' side, American Canyon scored 48 points to finish tied for first place with Tamalpais. Windsor placed third with 46 points.

The Wolves got two wins, one from their 4×100 team and the other from junior Peyton Crowder in the triple jump. Already one of the section leaders in the event, Crowder posted the second-best mark of his career, clearing 45-02.25.

Meanwhile, the 4×100 team of Crowder, Jona Budu, Timothy De Jesus and Jordan Burse won their event with a time of 42.06, a new Redwood Empire area record and the No. 7 time in the NCS this season.

Windsor got two wins, courtesy of sophomore Michael Erin in the 3,200 with a time of 9:31.55 and the 4×400 team of Domenic Andreacchi, Ethan Ponce, Ian Stanley and Marco Soto Jr., who just missed improving on their school record by .05 seconds with a time of 3:24.87.

Local boys also swept the top six spots in the 800, led by Casa Grande senior Jack Dufour, who posted a PR of 1:53.23, which stands No. 9 all-time in area history and is the second-fastest time in the NCS this season.

Coming in moments after him were Healdsburg freshman Phoenix De Maria Nall (1:53.65), Analy senior Owen Dawson (1:53.87), Maria Carrillo senior Jonathan Rath (1:54.57), Healdsburg senior Jake McWilliams (1:56.30) and Analy senior Quince Holman (1:56.34).

All of those times are PRs and De Maria Nall's, Dawson's and Rath's are in the top 10 in the section this season.

Maria Carrillo junior Cameron Jones also continued to climb the all-time ranks as he also PR'd with a first-place finish in the 1,600, clocking a time of 4:12.82. That's an area junior class record, breaking a time that had stood since 1998, and moves him to No. 6 all-time in the event in area history and No. 2 in the NCS this season.

Another standout was Healdsburg sophomore Teague Jasper, who improved on his PR and section-leading mark in the high jump by clearing 6-08. That tied for the seventh-best jump in the state this year and moves him into the top-20 all-time in area history.

Other local winners were Vintage senior Mason Howell in the 200 (21.82), Analy sophomore Brady Andrews in the long jump (21-00), Cardinal Newman junior Vicente Adan in the discus (166-08) and Analy's boys 4×800 team of Dawson, Holman, Jeffery Gonsalves and Logan Dickson (8:01.32).
