CCS track trials: Coronado rewrites Salinas school record in advancing in the 400
GILROY — It was more about survival than marks or time. Yet, lane assignments are significant and Jaslyne Coronado put herself in a good spot.
In the process, the Salinas High senior sprinter rewrote her own school record Saturday in the 400 meters and will head into next weekend’s Central Coast Section track and field finals chasing a spot in the state meet.
Coronado blistered the Gilroy High track, clocking 55.40 seconds to record the second fastest time among the eight qualifiers at Saturday’s CCS trials.
“I was out there to push, to run my fastest time,” Coronado said. “I had no idea how these girls run their race. I was racing the clock. I wanted to run a strong race.”
Coronado’s time is the fourth fastest in county history behind North Salinas’ Clara Adams, former U.S. Olympic Trials 100 hurdles qualifier Sani Roseby of Monterey, and Santa Catalina’s Mikayla Revera.
By virtue of her finish at the trials, Coronado is assured of either Lane 3 or 5 for the finals. Winning her heat guaranteed her a spot in the finals.
“I didn’t want to leave any doubts,” said Coronado, whose time is under the automatic state qualifying mark if attained at the section finals. “Warming up, I felt good. No shin splints. I got out of the blocks well.”
Coronado, who also advanced into the 200 finals, ran two-tenths of a second faster than her school record time in the 400 recorded earlier this year.
“Some runners get out crazy,” Coronado said. “Others cruise the first 100. I needed to stay confident in my race and push, but not gas out. I needed to trust myself and the training I have put in. I feel like I have more to give.”
Masters Meet champion Drew Jackson continued to drop time in the 100 hurdles for Rancho San Juan, advancing to the finals by clocking the third fastest time in the trials in 15.30.
The top three in each event at the section finals advance to the state meet, or anyone who meets a state qualifying mark during the finals.
A week after setting a county record in the 400 relay, Palma’s quartet of Emily Veliz, Elsie Sargenti, Addy Jefferson and Joshalland Berring advanced with the seventh fastest time at 48.81, just off their county record of 48.56.
Teammate Carolina Lorca is headed to the finals in two events for Palma, uncorking the second best throw in the shot put at 37-feet-5 3/4, while unleashing the discus 118-feet-2 to go into the finals ranked No. 4.
Palma’s Isabella Sando and Stevenson’s Mary Zewert advanced in the pole vault after both cleared 9-6 to be among 12 qualifiers for the finals.
Ozzy Godoy’s bid to return to the state meet in the 300 intermediate hurdles for Palma remains alive after he posted the fifth fastest time in the trials at 38.74. The Chico State-bound senior also advanced in the pole vault with a mark of 13-0 feet.
One of the more impressive marks during the meet came from North Salinas thrower Anarae Ashurst, who tossed the discus a CCS-leading 176-5. The junior also qualified in the shot put.
Ashurst will be joined in the shot put finals by Monterey multi-sport athlete Kitiona Tautolo, who uncorked the 12-pound iron ball 50-feet.
Angel Gonzalez extended his season in the long jump for Palma, leaping 21-5 1/2, while Alvarez’s Jaylan Ward sailed 20-10 to move on.
North Salinas’ Javier Luna advanced in the 800, as did teammate Hector Sanchez Figueroa in the pole vault. Ben Owen of Rancho San Juan also extended his season in the pole vault.
