CIF-SS softball playoffs: Bonita's Adriana Mangini belts two HRs in win over Ganesha

The Bonita softball team won Saturday's much anticipated CIF Southern Section Division 2 second-round game against Ganesha, flexing its muscles before holding on late for an 11-8 victory.

Top seed Bonita (22-8) advances to Wednesday's quarterfinals, where it will take on the Whittier Christian/Warren winner at a site to be determined.

The Giants (19-3) have been without ace pitcher Ava Phillips for nearly a month due to injury, and the Bearcats feasted offensively, scoring five runs over the first two innings, and adding four more in the sixth to take a 10-2 lead.

Bonita shortstop Adriana Mangini had a big day, going 3-for-5 with two home runs, five RBIs and two runs scored.

The Bearcats, who entered the game with 34 home runs this season, added another to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning. After Koa Puppe doubled, Mangini betled a two-run homer - her fifth of the season.

Puppe had a strong day too, going 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and three runs scored. Sarah Yeats was 2-for-4.

The Giants quickly tied the score in the bottom half of the inning. Nevaeh Wilson came home on a bases-loaded walk and Malia Becerra scored on a ground out to make it 2-2.

But the Bearcats jumped back in front. Leah Reynolds doubled in two runs in the second inning and Madi Arzate drove in another run to put them back on top, 5-2.

Mangini added a solo home run in the sixth inning - her six of the season - to put the Bearcats up 6-2.

After adding four runs in the sixth inning to take a 10-2 lead, the Giants answered with four runs in the bottom half to pull within four runs.

The Giants trailed by five runs going to the seventh inning and got solo home runs from Mississippi State commit Lacy Vantuinen and Fresno State commit Domina Lowman in their comeback attempt, but ultimately came up short.

DIVISION 1

LA MIRADA 3, PALOS VERDES 0

The No. 4 seed Matadores got a strong pitching performance from junior Alison Ortega to knock off the Sea Kings in the second round of the Division 1 playoffs.

Ortega threw a complete-game shutout, allowing three hits with 10 strikeouts.

La Mirada (24-4) advances to Wednesday's quarterfinals where it will take on the winner between Etiwanda and Westlake at a site to be determined.

The Matadores didn't have a big day offensively. Palos Verdes pitcher Daniella Boccanfuso was tough too, finishing with 14 strikeouts.

But The Matadores were able to get to her, and that was the difference.

The Matadores took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning after Alanna Adams' double scored Rylee Thurmond, and they added another run on an error in the sixth inning. Adams led the way going 3-for-4.

Riley Hilliard singled home Adams in the seventh inning, and that's all the offense the Matadores needed to advance.

LA HABRA 6, MURRIETA MESA 4

The Highlanders pulled off the biggeset upset of the Division 1 playoffs, knocking off top-seed Murrieta Mesa after overcoming a 3-0 deficit with five runs in the fourth inning.

Rylee Gruener's grand slam in the fourth inning turned a 3-1 deficit into a 5-3 lead for the Highlanders, and they were able to hold on down the stretch.

La Habra's Alyssa Hernandez was 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored and Andrea Langenberg also drove in a run.

Senior Samantha Cervantes was a workhorse, throwing a complete game on 107 pitches. Cervantes gave up three runs in the first inning, and settled down the rest of the way. She only gave up four hits with four strikeouts, and only two of the runs were earned.

La Habra (22-7) advances to Wednesday's quarterfinals, where they will play the Orange Lutheran-Chino Hills winner at a site to be determined.

DIVISION 5

SANTA MONICA 8, MUIR 6

The Mustangs were able to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull close, but they ultimately fell short in the Division 5 second-round game at home.

Muir sophomore Jaslene Hernandez was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Gigi Butler, Raquel Paez and Ginger Martinez all added two hits apiece, but five Mustangs errors led to four unearned runs for Santa Monica and that was the difference.

The Mustangs finish with a 15-11 record.
