Prep roundup: Two South Bay pitchers throw no-hitters as regular seasons wrap up

Ava Norquist is ready to go for the Central Coast Section playoffs.

Los Gatos' junior pitcher had a dream finish to her penultimate year of league play on Friday, no-hitting Mountain View as the Wildcats won 6-0 to close out a perfect campaign in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League's De Anza Division on senior night.

Norquist went seven innings with a walk as her lone blemish and 11 strikeouts. The Wildcats (24-2, 12-0), who rank No. 9 in the Bay Area News Group Top 20, received run-scoring contributions from Olivia Sickels, Haley Betti, Grace Tucker and Lana Leu, each of whom had an RBI.

Sickels, a senior, led the way offensively with three hits. Norquist, who also takes at-bats for the Cats, outhit Mountain View by herself, going 1 for 3.

She needed only 79 pitches (62 strikes) to set down 22 batters faced, just one over the minimum.

"Ava was just plain dealing tonight," Los Gatos coach Randy Frey told the Bay Area News Group. "She was in complete control."

Los Gatos is likely ticketed for the CCS Open Division bracket, which is expected to be released Monday afternoon. Mountain View is 10-16 and 4-8 in league play.

No. 20 Wilcox 12, Los Altos 0 (5)

Norquist wasn't the only pitcher to throw a no-hitter on Friday.

Wilcox's Tyler Scott, whose team entered the Bay Area News Group rankings this week, held Los Altos without a hit as the Chargers completed their regular season with a 17-7 overall record and 8-4 mark in league play, trailing only Los Gatos in the league standings.

Only a dropped third strike in the second inning prevented Scott from throwing a five-inning perfect game.

Like Norquist, Scott also outperformed her opponent at the plate, collecting a pair of hits and driving in three runs against the Eagles (11-13-2, 5-7).

Gwen Coplan had three hits and three RBIs for the Chargers. Makaila Butler, Sami Bianchi and Kai Estrada each drove in one run.

No. 6 Willow Glen 7, Leigh 2

Willow Glen (20-6, 13-1) wrapped up another strong campaign in the Blossom Valley Athletic League’s Mt. Hamilton Division with a comfortable win over its crosstown rival on the road.

The Rams jumped out with four runs in the top of the first and got contributions from across the lineup, including two RBIs from Camryn Eggers and Lyla Aguayo and one from Maia Mendoza and Darla Tarshis.

As it often has this season, Willow Glen split the pitching duties between freshman Kayla Valtscheff and senior Alanna Clincy. Valtsheff went three innings in relief and gave up two earned runs on five hits, while Clincy, continuing the day's theme, started and threw four hitless frames with nine strikeouts.

Lili Pon and Brianna Hooper each drove in a run for Leigh (15-9, 7-7).

Baseball

No. 2 De La Salle 3, No. 14 San Ramon Valley 2

The Spartans completed the season sweep of SRV led by a solid pitching outing from junior Cooper Barnes.

Barnes struck out four and allowed an earned run across 6 ⅓ innings of work to lead De La Salle to an East Bay Athletic League win. Nash Beckman, Austin Grove and Zach Tchejeyan each drove in a run for the Spartans, which finished the regular season 18-4, 7-1.

SRV (13-9-2, 3-5) was led by Drew Stasch and Carson Williams, who each knocked in a run.

Amador Valley 3, No. 11 Foothill 2

The Dons pulled off an upset on the last day of the regular season as they defeated their crosstown rivals at home in an EBAL battle.

Aaron Solomon hit a walk-off double in the ninth inning after Amador Valley mounted a comeback late, down two runs entering the fifth.

Amador Valley pitchers Nate Kelly, Aidan Foley, Matthew Brown and George Fagundes combined to allow seven hits and two earned runs.

The Dons improved to 10-14, 2-6. Foothill dropped to 14-10, 3-5.

No. 15 Willow Glen 5, Pioneer 4

The Rams avoided a Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division upset as they rallied from two runs down in the sixth inning to beat Pioneer and finish the regular season undefeated in league play.

Senior Zack Koontz had a monster game, hitting 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Senior Miles Austin knocked in another run.

Freshman Marcus Martinez led Pioneer with three RBIs.

Willow Glen finished the regular season 23-2-1. Pioneer dropped to 13-14, 6-8.
