Aptos baseball secures sole possession of second in SCCAL | Local Roundup
Freshman James Reilly had four hits and four RBI, and Aptos High's baseball team routed host San Lorenzo Valley 19-3 in its regular-season finale on Friday to secure sole possession of second place in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League.
The 19-run total was a season high for the Mariners (13-8 overall, 9-6 league), who finished with 19 hits, drew 10 walks, and had one batter beaned. They also stole nine bases.
Cal commit Cole McGillicuddy, a junior, had three hits, four RBI, and scored twice. Alec Mendoza had three hits, three RBI, and scored three runs. Dom Castillo had two hits, one RBI, and scored four runs. Finn Cormier doubled, had two RBI, and scored twice. Lucas Westfall scored three runs and Tyler Brooks scored twice.
Junior Larrabee Mitchell had three of SLV's six hits and two RBI. Brody Egner doubled, drove in a run and scored. Sean Johnson also had a hit and scored a run.
Damien Espinoza pitched three innings and picked up the win.
Sixth-place SLV (4-22, 1-13) plays a make-up game at SCCAL champion Soquel (20-4, 12-2) on Saturday at 11 a.m.
The Central Coast Section playoffs seeding meeting takes place in San Jose on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
Scotts Valley 10, at Harbor 1: The Falcons' first win over the Pirates in three league meetings dropped Harbor into third place in the SCCAL in the teams' regular-season finale Friday.
Junior Monte Jordan had two hits, three of the Falcons' 11 stolen bases, and scored twice.
Ben Acton and Rex Thompson each had a hit and scored a run for the fifth-place Falcons (9-16, 6-9). Acton also had one RBI. Thompson also stole three bases, and Dash Baker had two RBI.
Aiden Boles, Noah Solano, Russell Reddick, Evan Lampel, Pierre Bell, Vivian Mould and Kyle McMillan each had a hit for the Pirates (17-10, 8-7).
Junior Bryce McDonnell gave up a run in the first inning, settled down, and lasted five innings to pick up the win. Brodie Gallacher took the loss.
Harbor secured the SCCAL's final automatic berth into the CCS playoffs by finishing in the top three in league.
The CCS seeding meeting takes place in San Jose on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
College track and field
Redlands Final Qualifier: UC Santa Cruz sophomore Eliza Zheng took first in the high jump (5 feet, 3.25 inches) at the two-day Redlands Final Qualifier, which concluded Thursday at Ashel Cunningham Track in Redlands.
UCSC senior Alicia Dasalla took second in the women's 400 hurdles in 1:11.77, and Banana Slugs freshman Caeden Gardner took third in the men's 800 in 1:54.92.
Golf
Hole-in-one: Santa Cruz's Kevin Carle aced the 110-yard 15th hole at Pasatiempo Golf Club with a gap wedge on Friday. It's his second career ace.
