University and San Clemente fall in close finals in CIF-SS boys tennis

University and San Clemente’s boys tennis teams each had impressive runs in the CIF Southern Section playoffs halted by slim margins in the finals Friday.

University entered the final round of the Division 1 championship against Harvard-Westlake tied but fell 10-8 at the University of Redlands.

San Clemente finished the Division 5 final against San Marcos tied in sets 9-9 but lost the tiebreaker on games 85-81 at The Claremont Club.

University (19-4) led 4-2 after the first round. Harvard-Westlake (18-3) tied the score 6-6 entering the third and final round.

JiHyuk Im swept at singles to lead University, which was seeking a fifth consecutive section title in the top division.

The doubles team of Reid Hashimoto and Tyler Chandler added two victories for the Trojans, the two-time defending CIF State champion,

University coach John Kessler said University will play in the SoCal Regional next week.

Hleb Kauhanka swept at singles to pace San Clemente (12-9), which reached its first section final since 2015.

San Marcos (10-9) avenged a 10-8 loss at San Clemente in mid-April.
