Fryer: OC athletes ready to compete for titles at CIF-SS track finals

Orange County's track and field stars are sure to shine Saturday at the CIF Southern Section Championships at Moorpark High.

The CIF-SS meet, which has four divisions, begins the running events with the girls 4×100 relay at noon followed minutes later by the boys 4×100 relay. Orange County should be well-represented in both.

The final running event is the boys 4×400 relay, scheduled for a 6:20 p.m. start although track and field events often run late. That relay race also could have some impressive results for Orange County competitors.

Field events begin with boys and girls pole vault and the boys high jump at 9:30 a.m.

Among the Orange County athletes and teams likely to be winners in their CIF-SS divisions:

BOYS

Division 1

800: Mattheus Dos Santos, San Clemente, Jr. He ran his season best (1 minute, 52.42 seconds) last week for the division's best time in the prelims.

3,200: Aidan Antonio, Woodbridge, Jr. Antonio, who was the Orange County cross country athlete of the year in the fall, will be in the mix for this race.

Long jump: Dane Malloy, Dana Hills, Sr. His season best of 23 feet, 2.5 inches is No. 5 in California.

Triple jump: Malloy. A double for Dane?

Division 2

4×100 relay: Santa Margarita. Might be the top challenger to Newbury Park.

Division 3

100: Benjamin Hunter, Servite, Jr.: Leads California with his time of 10.27 seconds.

200: Jace Wells, Servite, So. Also in this race will be Servite's Jorden Wells, Jace's twin, and Harris.

400: Jaelen Hunter, Servite, So. His 46.55 is second-best in California this season. His top competition might be his teammate, Wells.

800: Alden Morales, JSerra, Sr. This could be one of the day's better races, with Morales' teammate Jack Burnett and Oaks Christian's Vin Krueger also in the hunt.

4×100 relay: Servite. It's just a matter of not dropping a baton for the group that ran a state-record 39.70 seconds at Arcadia.

4×400 relay: Servite. The Friars, a leading contender for a CIF-SS team championship, ran this in 3 minutes, 16.60 seconds in the prelims and has a California-leading time (3:10.33) in the books this season.

4×800 relay: JSerra. The Lions established the state-leading time of 7:38.13 at Arcadia.

Pole vault: Noah Richardson, Crean Lutheran, Jr. He is the county leader with a height of 15 feet, 6 inches.

Division 4

4×400 relay: St. Margaret's. The Tartans' relay had the second-fastest time at last week's prelims (3:26.66).

GIRLS

Division 1

3,200: Millie Bayles, Trabuco Hills, Sr. Something close to her 10:36.68 at the Arcadia Invitational could get her on the top of the medals podium.

4×400 relay: Portola and Trabuco Hills. But Long Beach Poly has a fine group, too.

Triple jump: Stavroula Liarakos, Los Alamitos, So. The county leader with a top mark of 38 feet, 9 inches.

Shot put: Jaslene Massey, Aliso Niguel, Sr. Her top mark this season is 53 feet, 2 inches, which is No. 1 in California. She might be able to win Saturday throwing it underhand.

Discus: Massey. Her best throw this season (188-7) is the No. 2 mark in the nation.

Division 2

100: Eden Murray, Mater Dei, Sr.: She has the county-leading time of 11.68 seconds.

200: Murray. Ran her personal-record (24.09 seconds) in last week's prelims.

1,600: Summer Wilson, Irvine, Sr. She did not run early in the season, but now seems to be in excellent form. With her long strides, she cruised to a win in the Pacific Coast League championships three weeks ago with a time of 4:45.40.

4×800 relay: Mater Dei. The foursome's time in the prelims (9:29.13) was the relay team's best of the season.

300 hurdles: Natalie McCarty, Newport Harbor, Sr. Her 42.46 seconds at the Arcadia Invitational is the No. 8 time in California this season. She could be busy Saturday, having qualified also in the 100 hurdles and high jump.

Discus: Amy Campbell, Capistrano Valley, Fr. Anything close to her season-best (144 feet, 11 inches) will win it.

Division 3

800: Reese Holley, JSerra, Jr. Holley has the No. 4 time (2:8.10) in California this season.

1,600: Holley. Floated to a winning time (4:55.69) at last week's prelims.

3,200: Monserrat Santillan Silva, Century, Sr. Jogged to a finish of 11 minutes, .89 seconds in the prelims. She had a season-best of 10:27.36 under the bright lights of Arcadia.

4×400 relay: JSerra. The Lions finished first at last week's prelims.

4×800 relay: JSerra. The state leader with a time of 8:50.32.

Pole vault: Helena Reuter, JSerra, Sr. She has Division 3's best mark this season at 12 feet, 4 inches.

Discus: Kai Beary, JSerra, Sr.: Getting near her season-best mark (131-11) could be enough.

Division 4

100: Maliyah Collins, Rosary, So. She is No. 7 in California at 11.70 seconds. Sophomore teammate Tra'via Flournoy will also be in the mix.

200: Maliyah Collins, Rosary, So. The state leader with a time of 23.35 seconds, which she ran at the Mt. SAC Relays last month.

400: Justine Wilson, Rosary, Sr. Wilson is No. 7 in California this season with a time of 54.43 seconds.

4×100 relay: Rosary. The Royals, who should be a top contender the CIF-SS team championship, set the county record this season with a time off 44.23 seconds. That is the No. 2 time in California history.

4×400 relay: Rosary. The Royals ran this event in 3:45.30 at Arcadia for the second-best time in the state this season.

Long jump: Jada Faison, Rosary, Sr. Her mark of 18-4.5 was the best at last week's prelims.

The stadium gates at Moorpark High School open at 8:30 a.m. Tickets that are exclusively available at GoFan.co. The price, before convenience fees are added: $14 for adults $7 for students and $7 for children of ages 5-13.

Parking at Moorpark High is $10 (cash only). Parking fees go toward Moorpark High athletics. (Tax write-off? Don't ask me.) The two entrances to the stadium are at the facility's west side. Parking lots C and D are closest to the entrances, with lots E and F also reasonably nearby.

Following the CIF-SS finals is the CIF-SS Masters Meet, from which is where athletes try to qualify for the CIF State Championships. The CIF-SS Masters Meet is at Moorpark High on March 23. The CIF State meet is May 29 and 30 at Buchanan High in Clovis.
