Carson and Banning baseball teams selected to City Section Open Division playoffs

The Carson and Banning baseball teams met in the L.A. City Section Division I final last season.

This season, the Colts and Pilots have moved up to the Open Division for the upcoming City playoffs.

The Marine League champion Colts (22-4-1) is the fourth seed and will host No. 5 Garfield, Wednesday at 3 p.m. The teams met all the way back in the season opener (Feb. 13), with the game ending in a 6-6 tie. The Bulldogs (19-7-1) finished the regular season in third place in the Eastern League.

Banning (15-11-1) finished second in the Marine League. The Pilots are the eighth seed and will be on the road at No. 1 Birmingham. The game will be played Thursday at 3 p.m.

The winners advance to the semifinals May 20 at a site to be announced, followed by the final, May 23 at Dodger Stadium.

The Division I playoffs will also begin Wednesday. San Pedro (12-15) is the seventh seed and will host No. 10 Taft. Narbonne (12-16) is the 11th seed and the Gauchos will be on the road against No. 6 Palisades. The game will be played at Cheviot Hills Rec Center. The Pirates and Gauchos, finished third and fourth, respectively in the Marine League.

In Division II, No. 9 POLA (13-7) will be on the road at No. 8 Bravo Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Westchester (5-18) is the 13th seed in Division III. The Comets will host No. 20 Harbor Teacher (6-6) Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Mira Costa and Loyola boys volleyball to meet in finals

Old rivals Mira Costa and Loyola boys volleyball teams will meet Friday night in the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 final. The match will be played at Cerritos College at 7:30 p.m.

Top-seeded Mira Costa swept Huntington Beach in Saturday's semifinal. Loyola defeated second-seed Redondo Union.

The Mustangs and Cubs met March 20 in a nonleague match. Loyola won the first two sets, before the Mustangs rallied to win the final three sets and the match (18-25, 26-28, 25-22, 25-22, 15-11).

Mira Costa boys and girls lacrosse headed to CIF-SS finals

The Mira Costa girls lacrosse team will play in a second consecutive CIF-SS Division 1 final. The Mustangs defeated Mater Dei 17-11 in Saturday's semifinal. Mira Costa will face top-seed Santa Margarita in the final.

On the boys side, the Mustangs defeated Los Alamitos 10-4 in the semifinal. Mira Costa will face St. Francis in the finals, either Friday or Saturday.

Also, El Segundo girls are back in the finals again. The Eagles will face Huntington Beach in the Division 2 final.

Dates, times and locations have yet to be finalized.
