Azzi Fudd Scored Just 3 Points In Debut With Dallas Wings
The Dallas Wings made Azzi Fudd the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft and have decided to ease her onto the court rather than starting her in their season debut. But despite playing nearly half the game, Fudd's contributions to the team were pretty hard to defend.
In their 107-104 win over the Indiana Fever, Fudd started the game on the bench and played just under 18 minutes. She didn't exactly make the most of her time though, only shooting twice and finishing the day with three points, one rebound and one steal.
StatMuse noted that the three points Fudd scored were the fewest by a No. 1 overall draft pick in their WNBA debut in the last 20 seasons.
"Fraud Alert"
It didn't take more than a few minutes for fans to take to the comments and mock Fudd as a "fraud" or a "bust."
"They had the worst record in the league last year. How is the #1 pick is not good enough to crack their starting lineup?" one user on X remarked.
"This debut played out as expected, perhaps a bit worse. She was a nonentity running up and down the court," wrote another.
"Drafted a bust. We for sure getting top 4..." a third remarked.
"Bro a 4 year college player coming off the bench as the #1 pick on a team that was 10-34 last year is just (expletive) insane…"
But while Fudd may not have contributed much on the box score, many other fans dismissed the numbers, pointing out that the Fever don't need her to be a superstar on Day 1 given how deep their roster is right now.
"I'm ngl the Wings are very stacked and she didn't really need to contribute by shooting. Wings had 3 scorers of 20+ today. I actually like that she's knowing her role to start out."
"If you know anything about Azzi Fudd, it's that she takes a little bit of time to settle in and find her role. But when she gets comfortable, that's when she looks like the overall #1 draft pick."
"I love context and here's some with this stat. In its 30 year history, I believe only 5 #1 overall picks weren't opening day starters. Which would suggest they probably were featured a bit more. She'll be fine."
Fudd's WNBA career isn't going to be defined by her first game with the team. She has an entire season to play and will probably get her feet under her sooner or later.
