High school roundup: Berkeley continues late run to claim league title

When Berkeley lost to Piedmont in the first of a two-game baseball series last week, its margin for error had reached the edge of the cliff.

The Yellowjackets — ranked 12th by the Bay Area News Group — had to win their final three regular season games to finish atop the West Alameda County Conference Foothill Division standings.

No small task, for sure.

But Berkeley met the challenge.

The Yellowjackets beat Piedmont and then swept Bishop O'Dowd, which began this week with a two-game lead over the Yellowjackets.

On Thursday, Berkeley spotted O'Dowd four runs in the visitor's half of the first inning, then chipped away with a run in the first and another in the third.

A five-run fourth inning completed the scoring as the Yellowjackets won 7-4 to pull even with O'Dowd for first place.

Coupled with its 6-2 win at O'Dowd on Tuesday, Berkeley owns the tiebreaker and will be the No. 1 seed in the league playoffs next week.

O'Dowd will be seeded No. 2.

Seddrick Henderson pitched a complete game one-hitter on Thursday with 11 strikeouts for Berkeley (19-4-1, 7-3). The four runs he allowed were unearned.

Miles Mino and Enrique Sotelo each had two hits for the Yellowjackets, including a double. Both scored a run and knocked in two. Berkeley also got two hits, including a home run, from Akanni Owodunni and two hits each from Isaiah Mays and Tahj Neal.

SHP is 18-6, 10-2.

No. 13 Willow Glen 9, Leigh 1: Willow Glen remained perfect in the Blossom Valley Athletic League’s Mt. Hamilton Division behind two hits, including a triple, and three RBIs from Zack Koontz and two RBIs apiece from Joshua Kaminski, Gavin Holmes and Jack Rudd.

The first-place Ugly Eagles took command with five runs in the first. They added another run in the fourth and one more in the sixth as they improved to 19-3, 7-1.

Alhambra dropped to 13-8, 4-4.

No. 6 College Park 10, Benicia 0: Jayden Auld went 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs and Nicholas Motta had two doubles and two RBIs to lead College Park to a win at home in a DAL Foothill game.

College Park (18-4, 6-2) scored three in the second and broke it open with seven in the fourth.
