Baseball: Gap narrows in league races as Rancho Cotate beats Windsor, Santa Rosa upsets Analy

Rancho Cotate 1, Windsor 0

The Cougars are playing spoiler this season as they knocked off the league-leading Jaguars in a pitchers' duel Wednesday to make the North Bay League Oak division race very interesting heading into its final games.

Anthony Barbato fired a complete-game gem, holding Windsor (13-10, 8-3) to just two hits with one walk while striking out six. He outdueled Windsor ace Gavin Restad, who allowed just one unearned run on two hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts.

Rancho Cotate (11-11, 7-4) pushed across the game's only run on an error in the second inning, with Marshall Lemons coming in to score.

Luke Morie and Dylan McReynolds Jr. had the two hits in the game for the Cougars.

Windsor still holds the top spot in the league race, but its lead is down to a half game over Cardinal Newman, which still has two games left to play against last-place Maria Carrillo.

The Jaguars can clinch at worst a share of the league title if they can win Friday in the series finale against Rancho Cotate.

Cardinal Newman 3, Maria Carrillo 0

With Windsor's loss, the Cardinals now control their own destiny in the NBL-Oak race.

Mark Douglas fired a complete-game shutout Wednesday in the opener of a three-game series against Maria Carrillo (6-16, 1-9). The sophomore struck out six, walked none and allowed just two hits on just 68 pitches over his outing.

Newman (11-11, 7-3) plated a solo run in the first and padded its lead with two more runs in the fifth.

Jacob Wood and Brody Cameron each had RBI hits for the Cardinals.

Even if Windsor defeats Rancho Cotate on Friday, Cardinal Newman will finish as co-champion of the NBL-Oak if the Cardinals can finish the sweep of the Pumas this week. Those teams face off Friday and Saturday.

Santa Rosa 5, Analy 4

The Panthers threw a wrench into the NBL-Redwood race with their narrow victory over the league-leading Tigers on Wednesday.

The loss for Analy (15-8, 11-3), its fifth in its last seven games, creates a two-way tie for first place in the standings with Montgomery.

Daniel Mills had a big game for Santa Rosa (11-12, 8-6), going 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. His bomb came in the deciding four-run third inning that put the Panthers ahead 5-1.

Analy chipped away down the stretch but couldn't overcome the deficit. Kyle Russell had three hits with two RBIs and Emerston Johnson had two hits, including a double, with an RBI.

Mateo Fitzgerald also went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Panthers while Julian Suarez and Anthony Navarro combined for a gritty showing on the mound. Suarez went 3 1/3 innings in the start with two hits, three walks and two runs allowed, while Navarro went the final 3 2/3 ininngs with four hits, three walks, two runs and four strikeouts.

Santa Rosa can play even more of a spoiler if it can knock off the Tigers in the series finale Friday.

Montgomery 26, St. Vincent 3 (5 innings)

The Vikings made quick work of the Mustangs on Wednesday and are suddenly well positioned to make a play for the NBL-Redwood title.

It's the fourth straight win for Montgomery (13-9-1, 11-3) and 11th victory in its last 12 games.

Salvador "Bug" Pedroza led the way offensively, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and seven RBIs. V Prosser also doubled in a two-hit day with four RBIs, while Justin Howard, Benny Olivarez and Rocco Fazio all had two RBIs apiece.

Greyson Gariss earned the win on the mound with nine strikeouts, seven walks and one hit allowed.

Montgomery and Analy will be co-league champions if they both win their series finales Friday.

Healdsburg 10, Piner 0 (5 innings)

The Greyhounds plated six runs in the fourth to beat the Prospectors on Wednesday in NBL-Redwood play and extend their winning streak to six games.

Frank Rea drove in three runs and Mason Radelfinger had two hits with an RBI as seven different players for Healdsburg (16-7, 9-5) drove in a run.

Alex Mauro-Manos pitched four scoreless innings with nine strikeouts and two hits allowed to earn the win.
