This Is the Worst Move the 49ers Could Make Right Now
The NFL draft has delivered constant waves of criticism towards the San Francisco 49ers.
It's nothing to be surprised about, given the number of players they overreached for. However, their mediocre NFL draft shouldn't take away the positives this offseason.
The 49ers did a tremendous job in free agency and hired an adequate replacement for Robert Saleh with Raheem Morris. Even with the NFL draft, their offseason has been solid.
But that can change for them. All it takes is for them to make one errant move. It can go from a solid offseason to a questionable one fast, and that's if they sign a certain player.
Adding this player is illogical
The player who could strain their offseason atop the NFL draft is Joey Bosa. Under no circumstances should the 49ers sign him. It didn't make sense two to three months ago, and it doesn't now.
Yet, for some reason, The Sporting News is recommending that the 49ers sign him. And it's all because they have his brother, Nick Bosa. What an incredibly laughable point.
The 49ers should sign Bosa, not because of what he can bring to the defense, but for marketing purposes, essentially. That's the only benefit the 49ers get by signing him.
It's a pointless move to make now. Bosa priced the 49ers out. John Lynch alluded to it months ago. It doesn't matter if they have ample salary cap space. They shouldn't overpay a washed-up player.
That's what bad teams do. Besides, the 49ers drafted Texas Tech defensive end Romello Height. He's their replacement for Bryce Huff after he retired. Height will be the pass-rushing specialist.
"He's a heck of a player, but I think we're at a place where we're comfortable with what we've done," said Lynch at his pre-draft press conference.
If there's any edge rusher the 49ers should sign, it's Kyle Van Noy. He recently shared that he'd love to play with Fred Warner and the Niners. There's another option right there.
He should be cheaper than Bosa and would be a drastically better veteran presence for the young defensive players. Either way, the 49ers are fine right now with pass rushers.
It's not a terrific situation by any means, but that's where the 49ers have to coach some of the young guys up. They have to see what they can do with them.
Not every hole on a team needs to be a band-aid. The 49ers are already doing that at wide receiver when they signed Mike Evans and Christian Kirk. They shouldn't do it at edge rusher.
Especially not with Bosa.
