Padres pregame: Germán Márquez to IL, Fernando Tatis Jr. sits
The Padres have placed right-hander Germán Márquez on the 15-day injured list with inflammation in his forearm nerve, opening a necessary spot on the active roster for right-hander Griffin Canning to make his 2026 debut on Sunday.
First pitch is at 1:10 p.m. on Padres.TV.
The move for Márquez is retroactive to Saturday, a day after he walked a season-high five batters while allowing seven runs in five innings in a loss.
The Padres had won Márquez's previous four starts, but he has a 5.76 ERA through his first six starts.
Padres manager Craig Stammen announced after Saturday's loss that Canning would come off the injured list to make his debut on Sunday.
It is Canning's first start since posting a 3.77 ERA over 16 starts with the Mets last year, when his Achilles injury cut his season short.
Canning has a 4.65 ERA over 584⅓ innings in the majors, most of them with the Angels.
Canning, 29, had a 3.60 ERA over five rehab starts at Triple-A El Paso. He threw 62 pitches over five innings on Tuesday ahead of Sunday's activation.
As for Sunday's lineup, Fernando Tatis Jr. is sitting for the second time this season against left-hander Anthony Kay.
Tatis is still looking for his first home run. His last day off was April 15.
Tatis is hitting .261/.333/.311 with only five extra-base hits this season. He was 0-for-4 on Saturday after going 3-for-3 with a triple and a walk on Saturday.
Tatis is hitting .238/.333/.429 so far this year against left-handed pitching.
Without Tatis in the lineup, designated hitter Miguel Andujar will bat second and Nick Castellanos will start in right field and bat seventh.
Here is how the White Sox (16-17) will line as they look to sweep the Padres (19-13) losers of four in a row:
